here in pa the  law requires the plate to be readable  at 50 feet, now that does not cover what the operators are--cute?

Sounds like for those people that live on dirt roads, they will need to develop a License Plate Washer - Mighty hard to keep a clean plate especially during Mud Season in Vermont

I have always known that but never even thought about it since. I have never cleaned it off but it does make sense. Think about it. Stoeln car with child. How would you see the plates if they were all covered in mud. Sorry Ed, I love you but....

It is something to justify a lawful stop just like getting pulled over for having a air freshener on your rear view mirror.  Cops will use that just to check you out and make sure everything else is on the Up and Up.  it is required by law to have a plate visable and displayed on your vehicle while operating on a public through way.  It's in Title 23 somewhere Ed i have no clue where though haven't opened that book in a few years lol.

I've always tried to keep my plates clean. Plus in mud or snow season it is a very good idea to clean your headlights as well. It makes a huge difference when driving at night to have clean headlights.

Wait, Josh, They can pull me over for having an air freshner hanging from my rearview mirror???  That is crazy!

Yes they can Mary Kay, It's called "obstruction of view" you will see this happen a lot during "Click it or Ticket". It is an easy way to bust people not wearing there seat belt and check all their info.  There is a story that the famous Island Pond Constable Teddy Miller once wrote a ticket to a Nun for having a rosary hanging from her rear view mirror.   I don't know if it is true but it wouldn't surprise me he seemed to take his job to whole different level.

Funny you should say that Josh.  Since my house fire, my Aunt gave me a rosary and I have had it hanging over the rear view mirror WITH my air freshner.  Oh, I am a rebel! LOL

It seems to me that a nun would have more respect for her rosary than to hang it from her rear view mirror like a pair of fuzzy dice.  Teddy Miller gave me a ticket once.  I was speeding, he nailed me for it.  It's kind of funny how that happens like that.  Someone commits a moving violation like speeding, going through a stop sign, etc., they get caught and get a ticket.  I still make sure I watch my speed going through Island Pond and he hasn't even been in the state for years.  I guess he did his job.

Doesn't add up, Ed. Red Flag.
What does "Where are you going ?" have to do with a "dirty plate" ?
There is technology that reads plates and might have not registered, so the stop,
but again.... "Where are you going ?"

And on another note, nothing should hang from your mirror.

Chris, every time I've ever been pulled over, the officer has always asked where I was going. If the officers are over-reaching or asking things they shouldn't, then our elected officials should work towards changing the laws. Hint, hint. :)

Every time I've received a ticket in the past, the officer has asked "Where are you going?"  I think this is pretty standard, and not a red flag at all.  I'm guessing every state has a regulation where you have to keep your plate visible, otherwise what's the point of having a license plate?

Interesting situation here in Florida. If you choose a frame around your license plate that obscures any of the plate, you are subject to a ticket.

General questions like "where are you going?" or "where you coming from?" are always asked.  It's really just chit chat but it helps a officer feel out the demeanor of the person he is speaking with.  You don't have to answer them you can by all means say "its none of your business" but it's a sure way to get a ticket.

I heard that some states are beginning to eliminate certain plate designs like ones with extra pictures, symbols, silhouettes, etc, because its getting harder to indentify what state they are from at a glance, because there are so many variations.

a friend in law enforcement tells me that "Where are you going ?" is a great icebreaker question to begin evaluation of possible impairment.

especially if they're headed in the wrong direction.

23 V.S.A. Section 511:

A motor vehicle operated on any highway shall have displayed in a conspicuous place either one or two number plates as the commissioner of motor vehicles may require....The number plates shall be kept entirely unobscured, the numerals and the letters thereon shall be plainly legible at all times.

AND

HAHAHAHA I'm coming for you Ed. J/K

I don't really pull anyone over unless they are just being plain stupid and unsafe I keep the selectboard happy that way.  Not that it matters, come 2012 the state takes away all powers of the Constable position away anyway.  So I see the position probably going to disappear soon in the state of VT anyway.

OK, so what about the stickers Jiffy Lube or any other shop put up in top left corner of windshield to remind you of your next oil change?  Are they ok or is this another silly excuse to pull you over and ask me where have I been and where am I going and do I have a body in the back of the truck :-)

There is actually a line on your windshield Mary Kay, about 4 to 5 inches from the top of it.  It's cool if it is above there that is how people get away with the stickers across the top of their windshield like "NO FEAR" or "FOX RACING" ar that strip of tint you sometimes see.

It's kinda funny since the officers have so many things that can obstruct their view....Spotlight, radar unit, video camera, laptop, shotgun...etc

Actually Scott, several motor vehicle laws don't apply to an on-duty officer (seatbelt, speeding), and that's probably one of them.

Your kid is starting a bit early isn't she? ;)

Actually, the only exceptions to the law prohibiting windshield obstruction are items placed:

(1) in a space not over four inches high and 12 inches long in the lower right-hand corner of the windshield;

(2) in such space as the commissioner of motor vehicles may specify for location of any sticker required by governmental regulation; (i.e., inspection sticker)

(3) in a space not over two inches high and two and one-half inches long in the upper left-hand corner of the windshield;  (this is where your oil change reminder sticker goes)

Anything else on the windshield is in violation of this statue.  In case you are curious, here is the link to Title 23 of the Vermont Statues which governs motor vehicles: http://www.leg.state.vt.us/statutes/chapters.cfm?Title=23

Chapter 13 contains most of the laws regarding motor vehicle operation.

Yeah, cops are SOOO much better drivers than the rest of us, so they can deal with all of their distractions better than the rest of us.

Yes, they have a job to do.  Yes, some exceptions can and should be made to allow them to DO their job without extra liabilities, etc, but the number of electronic devices they have in their police cars now should require a second person (Mandatory!!) to operate them all, or remove them.

To address a prior comment about cops having a reason to pull someone over for not wearing a seatbelt - I thought VT reclassed the seatbelt violation as a Primary traffic violation being not wearing a seatbelt IS cause to pull someone over.

I believe you are right Cedarman, you can pull someone over for not wearing their seatbelt now.

Mary Kay, sorry for the bad advice the hash marks on the windshield is the Law in CA or was when I was out there.  Anyways still the same outcome you don't need to worry about your Oil sticker hahaha.

Seatbelt violations for anyone over the age of 18 are secondary violations - you cannot be pulled over primarily for not wearing a seatbelt.  However, unseatbelted individuals under the age of 18 and child restraint violations are primary violations.

So this morning I was heading to work around 8:50 and as I was traveling down 104A I come up on this white panel van.  It was covered with dirt so bad that I could not read the lettering on the back of it the only thing I could see clearly was the license plate because it had been wiped clean.  It made me think of our convo on here and upon getting closer to the van at the intersection of route 7 I could read the company's name "Roupe's Plumbing and Heating"!!! I have to say Ed it made me laugh!!

No worries Trevor, the top 4 inches of my windshield is tinted LOL.  Although though it came from Nissan that way and it's in the glass so there isn't anything I can do about it.  It would probably be kind of hypocritical for me to give you a hard time about your sticker.

ED,
The cop was a rook.
My first ever ticket at age 42 was an illegal left turn into the middel lsnd onto a one way road.

A cop friend of mine says that only rooks know and care about your situation and mine.

MEOW!
