"Very few Vermont jobs have come down the line in the Champlain Bridge construction, but one Vermont woodworking company was happy to see a late contract come their way. Amoskeag Woodworking out of Fairfax is shaping and constructing the overhang pieces to lay across the bridge, which will act as a barrier for the cement when it is time to pour. This is not typical work for the company-- its expertise is in cabinetry and mill work. But they were happy to see the work come their way a few weeks ago when a Flatiron engineer who lives in Fairfax stopped by their workshop. Amoskeag workers say they believe the time crunch lead the engineers to buy local.
"I think what happened was they realized they needed to get things moving along with the project and this building of the forearms is very consuming, and detailed process and they were looking for someone who had the size and capacity to do the job," said David Smith of Amoskeag Woodworking."
