Controversy over Gold Star license plates
Some controversy over Vermont's Gold Star license plates.
The Gold Star license plates were unveiled two years ago so family members could honor their fallen soldiers.
Recently the mother of a U.S. Marine from Vermont applied for one after her son was killed during a training exercise. She was denied. The state said the plates are only for those killed in combat.
Some lawmakers want to offer a different plate for those killed while on active duty, similar to how the military offers gold star pins.
Opponents feel that would take away from the integrity of the plates, saying there is a huge difference between dying at war and on a military base.
