An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck near Washington, D.C., the U.S.Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was in Virginia.

The quake was felt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York, and on Martha's Vineyard where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

I did not feel it, but apparently many others in VT felt some shakes.  My foster brother in NC said the kids said the furniture shook for about 20 seconds, but they were fine.  They are all concerned for the Tornado/Hurricane warnings coming this weekend for them.

I guess it was felt as far away as Toronto.  Friends in Boston were evacuated from their buildings for a short time even.  Didnt feel anything here in Colchester but others did

Yes we did! It actually shook the house enough make a coat rack here shake hard enough to see the thing rock a little.

I work at UHC and it shook pretty good. A lot of people temporarily left the building. The building rocked for a while, then settled down.

I read a lot of pretty stoopid posts up here on the Anchorage Daily Worker site...

"Welcome to our World, they need to man up, why freak out over a 5.8 , 5.9?"

I have been here in Alaska a few days and I STILL hold my breath when one comes in, and head for cover.

You never know when it is over.

That "little" 5.9 was only 3 miles deep. With the geotechnics down there, that is pretty darn high up at the surface.

You all have "hard" ground down there... it travels and shakes BAD!

A few years back we had that 7.8 and I still swear I never felt it and I was up, standing still, washing dishes, the kids felt it because they were at rest, as I was cleaning the kitchen...........

We have soft ground so I should have felt it... roll at least.

I do not blame anyone for "freaking out" about any earthquake.
