Title: Fall Is Just Around The Corner
Post by: Henry on September 14, 2011, 08:00:04 AM
Looks like we will be getting a frost on Thursday & Friday nights.  I believe that Gilles Rainville has closed his veggie stand on 104A - Not sure what is happening down at Marvin's Gardens and I see the sweet corn signs for Gingue Bros have been picked up.

Time for the fall veggies.  Mary Kay called me yesterday and said somebody offered her some beets and wondered if I wanted some.  My parents and Maryann & I loved beets cooked, diced with a little butter.  A neighbor brought me up some buttercup squash and I cooked one of those - Delicious also, again with a little butter & sugar.   Another friend brought me over some potatoes & brocolli.  Had some of the potatoes with some hamburg gravy and sweet corn that I had cut off the cob - makes a good meal for me and doesn't take much time to fix, plus I can mashed the cold potatoes, throw a little of the gravy mixture on top, throw it in the microwave and voila, a meal in 5 minutes.

Fall is my favorite time of year and I hope you all have a chance to enjoy it.  There is no place any more beautiful than Vermont in the fall of the year and we do have a lot to be grateful for up here in Northern Vermont where Hurricane Irene did not effect us.

I always thought it was called butternut squash. Is there a butternut AND a buttercup squash? Or is it one of those things that it just depends on where you are from as to what you call it like bullhead and catfish.

There is a butternut that is a tan squash that is longer like a big tan cucumber while the buttercup is similar to an acorn squash.  Try googling them and it will probably come up with a photo of all three.

Squash is squash and it is all AWESOME!

We have snow on the back peaks around Anchorage already.

No frost yet down in the city, weird.
