The Fairfax Historical Society had very good attendance at their meeting this past Sunday night. Professor Bean has done a lot of research on the Orphan Trains and his father was one of those children. He mentioned several that were picked up by families at the train station in East Fairfield and I knew two of them, who both spoke very highly of their adopted parents. Professor Bean has written several books on this topic. A great presentation that lasted about 45 minutes.
The Fairfax Friendly Senior Citizens had their Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday and they also had a teacup auction. I had never paid much attention to it before, but Nancy Ladd had mentioned to me that she was making some homemade doughnuts, so I got there a little early and bought 25 tickets to put in the paper cups beside the items I wanted to bid on. Besides the doughnuts there were peanut butter cookies, date filled cookies, banana breads, peanut butter fudge and a pumpkin pie that caught my eye, so I distributed my tickets among all the items. When I went up to buy my tickets that Nancy happened to be selling, she had made an extra half dozen doughnuts and gave them to me. Needless to say, I was elated. Anyhow, I sat through the drawings and none of my tickets were pulled out of the cups - Thank God Nancy gave me the doughnuts, otherwise I would have come home empty handed.
This was an excellent fund raiser for the Seniors as there were several tables of items you could bid on. Like many of the other Seniors there, however, I did not bid on a lot of those things as in case I had won, I would have had to find some place to store it at home and I have enough stuff already.
We had about 45 Seniors there yesterday. Bill & Dot Meisenzahl were up from their new home in Burlington. They seem very happy and told me to stop in. I have put their phone number and address up under Announcements, so definitely will call before I go down. What a wonderful active couple they are.
