Title: JoAnne Captures The Unique Sunrise This Morning
Post by: Henry on December 02, 2011, 06:58:22 PM
Sharon Meyer had a similar photo to the one JoAnne took this morning - The morning crew at WCAX took their photo.  Sharon explained it, but I will need to wait until the post it on their website to repeat it:

Friday morning sunrise......predicting the days' storm?

This is a sun pillar, ...Which we see on occasion when the sun is still low on the horizon. It's caused by the sunlight bouncing off of falling ice crystals in those high cirrus clouds, ...You can see sun pillars, ...But also a moon pillar if you are lucky and the conditions are just right.
