In 2010, the Vermont legislature passed a law to implement a statewide program, funded by manufacturers, for free collection and recycling of computers, televisions, monitors, printers, and computer peripherals. This program kicked off in July of 2011 with over 90 collection locations across the state. The first program year 4,819,602 pounds of electronic waste was collected at no charge to Vermont households, charities, school districts, and small businesses.
Even though so much was collected, there are still a lot of people who don’t even know about the program and the opportunity for free recycling. We also would like to let people know that these items cannot be put in the regular trash and if they do bring them in for recycling to take precautions to protect the security of their data.
A brochure and letter sized poster that provide details of the free recycling (E-Cycles) program run by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation can be accessed at www.vtecycles.org (http://www.vtecycles.org) under education and outreach.
Take your electronic devices to any Vermont e-cycles location for free recycling. Permanent recycling locations are available across the state. For a list of free locations visit:
www.vtecycles.org
Accepted items include:
Computers
Monitors
Televisions
Printers
Computer Peripherals
Other items may be accepted with a fee.
Should you have questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. For additional information about the program see: www.vtecycles.org or contact us at 1-855-6ECYCLE.
