Title: It has warmed up to -15.3 below zero
Post by: Henry on January 03, 2013, 05:55:59 AM
It was -18 below zero shortly after midnight, but now we are in a warming trend.  Certainly hope the homeless were able to stay warm last night.  Had a former co-worker call me from North Carolina call me to check on how I was doing.  I happen to be one of those fortunate ones who has many people checking on me.

Ed Roupe was up yesterday to install a new kitchen faucet for meand also change my water  filter.  Always have a good visit when Ed stops by.  Ralph Scott, who was my long time all around handyman, was brought up in the course of the conversation.  Wasn't much that man couldn't do and do well.  Always had his phone number on my refrigerator, so if something went wrong at the house, Maryann could call him.  Remember once when he was unable to come down, he sent his son-in-law Eastman Root down to help her out.

At 6:30 this morning I had -36 degrees on 2 thermometers here at the house.  It always seems that we are colder than any one down here in the village next to the brook.  At the top of the hill it is usually 8-10 degrees warmer.  Coldest it has been in several years.  My sheep don't seem to mind.  I am just glad we are not lambing yet!

Hi John,
Travelled for over 40 years to work in Burlington/essex and used to stop at Parsons Store to check the temperature so I could get the coldest temperature in Fairfax.  Since you are not far from that spot, I believe it was that cold at your house.  Howard's old mercury thermometer was there for years.  Don't know if it is still there or not.

Ok - I am so glad that I don't live in Vermont any longer - I could not handle that kind of temperature.  I live next to Disney and I freeze when the temperature is 50 down here.  I can remember it being that cold when I was younger - I can also remember the snow banks so high that you could make tunnels out of them - we didn't have snow like that for a very long time.  I have been gone over 15 years now - I miss September and October when the trees are turning their beautiful colors, but I don't miss the coldness!  Good luck to all of you and stay warm.
