LOUISE AIMEE (DESVERGNES) LYNCH
BURLINGTON — Louise Aimee (DesVergnes) Lynch, 87, of Burlington, died peacefully in the UVM Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was born in Montgomery Center on Oct. 28, 1927, the daughter of Thomas and Helene (Gagnon) DesVergnes.
Her father, Thomas, died five months before her birth; and after 18 months living in Montgomery, her mother needed to go to work, so she was sent to her grandmother’s home in Canada. At the age of three she joined her brother, Marcel, and sister, Theresa, at The Saint Joseph’s Orphanage in Burlington. She learned her parenting and nurturing skills from the Sisters of Providence.
Louise graduated from Cathedral High School in 1944, at the age of 16. She graduated from Trinity College in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree and taught one year at Richford High School. On June 20, 1949, she married John C. Lynch in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. They were married for 62 years, until his death in 2011.
After raising her family of seven children, she returned to teaching, recertifying for Elementary Level and taught at Lawrence Barnes Elementary School. She retired in 1984, after spending her last 10 years as Remedial Math Teacher. She remained friends with “The Bosworth Group“ of colleagues, enjoying lunches out. As a teacher, she endeavored to challenge children to master the highest degree of math confidence always seeking and creating new and inventive ways of practicing and mastering skills. She worked on the Burlington School District’s math curriculum always improving her own techniques. She mentored other teachers and was also a cooperating teacher for many student teachers. As a mother and grandmother, she was not only loved, but highly respected. She maintained close friendships with her Trinity College friends and many of her high school friends. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, logic problems, and all range of card games. She was an excellent bridge player.
She also enjoyed computer solitaire and keeping up with her grandchildren on Facebook. Her house was always filled with lively debates about politics, religion and social justice.
She made many new friends at Hawk’s Meadow in Essex, hosting frequent coffee and donut hours.
She is survived by her seven children, Patrick and wife, Susan, of Whispering Pines, N.C., Steven and wife, Janice, of Fairfax, Karen Lynch-Harmon and husband, Sidney, of Essex, Janet Schweizer and husband, Paul, of Keene, N.H., Sarah Lynch and partner, Robert Kurth, of Essex, Susan McDonald and husband, Jeffrey, of Charlotte, and Jean Lynch and partner, Michael Halpin, of Nokomis, Fla.; 19 grandchildren, Dr. Thomas Cochran (Dr. Alexis Cochran), Justin Bessette (Lan Vu), James Cochran (Callie Ewald, partner), Rebecca Lynch (Karbert Ng), Andrew Harmon (Amy Norrman), Carolyn (Lynch) Eyer (Dan), Dr.
Amy Cochran (Dr. Gabriel Zayas-Caban), Dr.
Jonathan Bessette (Alexis Coplin), Ross Harmon (Amy Taylor), Christoper Lynch (Eileen O’Sullivan), Joanna “Jojo“ Lynch, Timothy Lynch (fiancee, Christine Huleatt), Bridget Hennessey, Shannon Hennessey, Tyler McDonald, Erin Hennessey, Ethan McDonald, Samuel Schweizer (Katie), and Robert Schweizer; and eight precious greatgrandchildren, Madeline Bessette, Eli Cochran, Cassidy Eyer, Noah Bessette, Orion Cochran, Arthur Bessette, Kai Cochran, and Grayson Eyer. She is also survived by nieces and nephews on
the Lynch and McLaughlin sides of the family; has many DesVergnes cousins; and maintained a special bond with her former daughter-in-law, Mary Guinness Lynch.
She was very sadly predeceased by a granddaughter, Ila Anne Pollard, in 2005. She was also predeceased by her parents; sister, Theresa DesVergnes McLaughlin; devoted brother, Marcel Thomas DesVergnes, during World War II; brother-in-law and sisterin- law, Robert E. and Mary K. Lynch; and brother- in-law Earle “Buzz“ McLaughlin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Essex, followed by a Committal Service at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. Following the burial, a luncheon reception will be provided in the Father Murray Room of the Church.
