Title: Water Woes - Burlington - 473 Fletcher Road
Post by: Henry on August 31, 2007, 07:43:11 AM
Hi All,

Well, my water woes are nothing like the city of Burlington had yesterday, but I did have some problems.  Was watching the news and some of their water pipes in the city of Burlington are over 100 years old and do require some major work.  In case you missed it, click on the following link:

My problem has continually gotten worse and I recently lost pressure on the water going through my water softener, then I began to see sand and grit in the water.  The washing machine strainers are now apparently quite clogged, one of the bathrooms has a toilet that doesn't work.  At first I thought I had a softener problem so bypassed the softener.  That is when I began to notice the sand and grit in the water.  I called Chevalier's Drilling on Tuesday night, but it ended up they didn't make it until shortly after noon yesterday.  After several tests he determined that the sand and grit was coming from the well and decided he would go outside and see if he needed to raise the pump up.  When he got out there, he noticed water around the pipe coming up out of the ground and had me go in and start the pump up.  Sure enough, water was coming up around the pipe and he said there was definitely a leak.  He told me if I could get a back hoe that he would fix it right now as my water line coming out of the well is 6 1/2 feet deep.

I looked across the road and saw Larry Young's back hoe sitting there so took a chance that JR might be there.  That he was and asked him if he could come down and dig up the pipe to check for a leak and he said he would be right down:

Within 5 minutes JR was there and digging as shown above

Mike Chevalier guided him

A nylon adapter was found to be split and Mike Chevalier replaced it with a brass one

And JR started recovering the pipe after more test were made for leaks

Hopefully everything is fixed as the water settles and clears out
Maryann and I went down to Warners for supper last night and on the way back from St. Albans stopped in at Donna Meunier's and got a couple gallons of drinking water to hold us over.

Needless to say it has a busy, stressful week, but as my mother used to say, things could have been worse.  Indeed it would have been had it happened in the middle of the winter or a number of other things.[/b]

You're pretty lucky to have a backhoe across the road, but even luckier to have JR!  I love the town and people I grew up with!  Suzy
