Title: Lots Of Unknown Local Activity Last Night On The Scanner
Post by: Henry on October 20, 2007, 08:25:05 AM
Fire Department was out until late last night for some unknown activity and according to Mike Cain's Blog he may have been active in it as he expected he said to get 2 1/2 hours sleep than back at it.  If anyone hears anything that can be made public, let me know or post something.

Yes, he was found. A happy ending.
WCAX was there and recorded a bunch of stuff. Because of a college football game, The News will be on a 7pm, or when the game gets over.

Hi All,

Now, I am sure that there will be various stories circulating about this incident, however, I received what I feel is some very reliable information on the situation, that until something was released by the media, I chose not to put up on my forum.

First of all, I certainly want to congratulate the numerous volunteers involved in the search for this individual.  I sat there listening to my scanner and had turned my front lights on as I watched the rain come down, thinking to myself, what a dedicated crew of volunteers we have on our Fairfax Fire and Rescue Teams.  I wasn’t really sure what was going on, but knew they were definitely searching for someone, but didn’t know exactly who.  I did say an extra prayer, before I went to bed, that they would be successful in they search.

This morning, I received some information on just what had happened and about the happy ending.  This is what I was told by an anonymous individual on the scene:

The family called a number of people in the area informing them of what had happened and around 7 p.m., The Fairfax Fire Department was called in to help by The Vermont State Police.  The Fairfax Fire Department walked around the area until probably 11 p.m., checking yards, the street and also checked with all the neighbors in the area.  State Police had been out earlier with K-9 Units, but had yielded nothing.

At about 12:30 a.m., Border Patrol came in and landed their helicopter in the area of the residence.  The copter went up into the sky 2 or 3 times and finally left around 3:30 a.m.  The State Police also brought in a mobile tactic unit (an RV) and there were 4-5 State Troopers  on site all through the morning.

This morning, around 6 a.m., more K-9 Units showed up, including support from New England Search & Rescue, a non-profit with volunteers and dogs out of Vermont and New Hampshire.  Colchester Rescue was brought in as well and they had at least 8 men and three units on the site.

Around 9:45, the man was found somewhere in the woods off Cherrierville Road. Two hunters happened to find him. He was brought back home and then Fairfax Rescue took him to the hospital around 10:30 am.

Truly a “Happy Ending.”

A special thanks to the anonymous individual who provided me with this information - They did an outstanding job of describing the events that occurred and I am sure there will be a number of versions out there from both the WCAX Television and most likely newspaper accounts tomorrow and Monday.

My search & rescue, Waterbury Back Country Rescue team was also called at about 845AM.  I was enroute with a crew when we were cancelled by VSP.  I was actually in a meeting last night with the head of the State Police search team.  I told them I was very familiar with the area in question and that I as well as members of my team would be available.

Hi All,

Channel 3 News reported tonight that 75 year-old John Kuhn of Fairfax who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease was found safe and sound by a couple of hunters from Westford, Earl Mongeon and Brian Zinger.  The two hunters had been shown a flyer before they went into the woods with a picture of Mr. Kuhn.  That flyer -- and two observant hunters -- helped bring Kuhn to safety. He was found a mile away from his home.

Brian Zinger said, "All of a sudden here comes this fella' with his walking stick that he picked up along the way obviously. He had no shoe and I said right away that I know that was the guy right there."  Kuhn was brought to the hospital for evaluation. He has since been released. His family says aside from some bumps, bruises, and sore feet. He's doing okay tonight.

I did see a couple of our Fairfax Fire Fighters, Mike Cain and Jordan Hayes in the video.  There may have been more, but my eyes are a little slow as I was trying to concentrate also on what they were saying.  I suspect they will have more in tomorrow's paper or on the WCAX Web Site.
