Title: An Obvious Change In Deer Hunting Season
Post by: Henry on November 13, 2007, 08:29:14 AM
It may be just me, but there just don't seem to be as many deer hunters as there used to be.  I remember when there were cars parked all over the place up here on The Fletcher Road, this year I haven't seen a single car and have only seen one deer in the back of a pickup truck headed up towards Fletcher.

Out back of our house used to be a place where many hunters went and up in the Southeast corner of the meadow some hunters had a tree stand and every year someone got a deer there.  One of the reasons is possibly safety as there is no way now that anyone should be in that area shooting towards the West due to the many homes that have been built off Shepardson Hollow Road and Fletcher Road.

I still see deer occasionally going across J. R. Young's pasture across the road and have seen them crossing the road when I drive down to the village going up Tracy Road, which has been a long time route for these deer over the 50+ years I have lived here.  Again, not a place anyone should be shooting a rifle with the many houses in the area.

I have been watching the paper every day to see if I could see a list of the lucky deer hunters, but so far no luck.  Each day I go down to the village, I drive around the village checking to see if I can see any deer hung anyplace.  I remember years ago when Tom & Daisy Collins lived next to the Old St. Luke's Rectory, the first day of deer season they always had two or three deer hung out back of the house or around the front porch.  Checked with one of the Collins Clan last Sunday and mentioned that and he told me that now quite a few of them go out to the State of Michigan to hunt and they had gotten two or three deer, but not in Vermont.

The other lucky hunters that usually have deer hung up are at Marvin & Cathy Thayers, but so far haven't seen any there either.

I did hear yesterday though, that up in Cherrierville there were a number of hunters that got deer up there.  Whether they got them in Fairfax or not, I don't know.
