Title: 9 Below Zero Here On The Fletcher Road At 8 AM
Post by: Henry on January 03, 2008, 08:12:06 AM
I have received lots of notes on the beautiful photo that Cathy Thayer sent me - Some people have used it as a background for their computer screen and one person told me that it gives you the illusion that you are actually walking down towards the bridge.  It kind of made a lot of people wish they were here to enjoy this winter weather - Well, this morning, they might have some second thoughts - It is still beautiful, but with the temperature at 9 below zero, I am procrastinating about going out and get the Free Press - I believe there is some doubt that the temperature will get out of the single numbers above zero today.

I used to always stop by Parsons Store (Now Foothills Bakery) back in the old days on my way to work and check the big Mercury Thermometer on the front of the store so I could truthfully relate to my co-workers the actual temperature here in Fairfax on those cold mornings - I believe that is probably one of the coldest spots in town.

WCAX was reporting 0 degrees with a chill factor of -18  That doesn't peak my interest about going out and getting the Free Press either.

Should we pick an "official" place to measure Fairfax's temperature ?
Who mans the official thermometer ?

I certainly don't mind posting the temperature here on the Fletcher Road, and as far as I know there is no official weather reporting station here in Fairfax.  MSN uses Burlington which is usually quite a few degrees different than Fairfax - The closest temperature to Fairfax is the official weather reporting station at the Morrisville Airport.  I checked the temperature in Burlington and it was -6 degrees and the one in Morrisville a short while ago was -13.  Below are my inside/outside temp from the sensor on the front of my house:

As a test, you can try clicking on the following Morrisville Link to see how your temperature correlates:

Let's see if I can remember all the numbers.

-6 degress around 8am.
The high was +0.5 at 2:05pm
-7 at 6pm
-9 at 6:30.
-12 at 8:30pm
-10 at 11:20pm
And -9.9 at 11:45pm.

Do you notice we don't talk about the temperatures during the summer?

While cleaning up FranklinOne, I noticed the basketball game against Hazen last year was Jan 14.
It was 50 degrees !

Henry's thermometer looks official.
I second, Henry.

Stay warm everyone.

What a change a day makes - Right now it is a little over 17 degrees above zero and we are getting flurries - Come Sunday there is a chance of rain as the temperature rises into the 40s.

As Mike said in his comment, we don't talk that much about the temperature in the summer.  Actually, we only talk about it in the winter when it gets to certain extremes, however, its a good conversation starter for a Vermonter any time.
