Title: Fairfax Rec Path - Read The Signs Folks - Please Pick Up Your Dog's "Poop"
Post by: Henry on January 13, 2008, 08:17:24 AM
Last week's warm weather has cleared the Fairfax Rec Path so that you can walk on the black top, so decided it would be a good time to get some exercise and parked my car above the covered bridge so I could walk on the most level part of the path.  What a great place to walk.  Unfortunately, like most things, even though there are signs for people to clean up after their dogs, that obviously is not being done, as you have to keep a careful eye out for dog "Poop" as you are walking along.

I will wait a while and see if it gets any worse, or if nobody picks it up, then I might just have to bring my camera on the next walk I take down there as I definitely will be upset if I accidentally step in it and find it on the rug in my car.

Is there a Mutt Mitt Station there?
You put a box of small plastic bags in a metal box (like a paper towel dispenser  in a public restroom) and put it on a pole in the ground (or on a fence), and place a trash can below.  This does not necessarily solve the problem, but it increases awareness and might encourage people into picking up after their dogs if you make it easy for them to do.  Placing a sign on the pole/fence, encouraging people to clean up after their dogs might help too.
This sounds like a good project for some boy scout troop, or Eagle Scout!  There could be one at each end of the path.  (although I don't exactly know where the end of the path is.)  Maybe just at the entrance?
I don't know who would empty the trash can, or if there's already one there or not.  Who would restock the mutt mitts?  Also, this does not solve the problem of the people who put the poop in the bag, and leave the bag on the side of the path.  I don't know where these people go...are they planning on walking back that way to pick up the poo, and forget?  Do they think someone will come by and pick up the bags of poo for them?
There are lots of rec. paths here, and also many dogs, so I understand the issue.  Dog poo is no fun!

There is a bag dispenser and signs at each end of the path. There are trash cans at each end as well with another one by the trees where there are picnic tables.
During the dry season(no snow), dogs are more apt to go off into the tall grass and do whatever. In the winter, they are not as likely to trudge through the deep snow to do that.
There is someone who mows along the path, dumps the trash and such. Gary Stewart did it last year. Not sure who will do it this year.

Hi--

I walked down from  the United Church yesterday and around the path.  Maybe someone had cleaned it up, it looked ok to me.  It is a great place for a short walk!
