A. CLAYTON BURNHAM

COLCHESTER — A. Clayton Burnham Jr., passed away Saturday, April 12, in the Green Mountain Nursing Home where he received wonderful care. He was born in West Hartford, Conn., Aug. 12, 1919, to Arthur Clayton Burnham Sr. and Mary ( Bartlett ) Burnham. In 1941 he graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He married Frances May Flanders of Johnson, in 1943. Most of his life was lived in Jericho. His real love was farming and he owned a farm in Barre for a few years. He later worked in several farm related jobs until his retirement from Mount Mansfield Union High School in 1983 after ten years as head of the maintenance department. He was always active in the Jericho Congregational Church, the Historical Society, and the Jericho Cemetery. In later years he was active in Senior Meal Programs. Clayton was predeceased by his wife, Frances and his sister, Edith Carlough. In 1994 he married Harriet Karr and they moved to Essex. He is survived by his wife Harriet of Williston, his son, Eric Burnham, and wife Barbara of Phoenix, Ariz.; also his stepchildren, Kareen and Jim Perry of Minn., Linda Garland, Bob Garland of N.H., Mary Jean Karr and partner Clair Dunn of Fletcher, Quentin and Marlene Karr of Fairfax; two special nieces, Frances Quellette and Ethelyn Bartlett; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service to honor Clayton's life will be Sunday, April 20, at 3 p.m. in the Jericho Congregational Church in Jericho Center with the Rev. James Perry officiating. Visiting hours will be Saturday, April 19, at Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot St., Richmond from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Jericho Congregational Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1022, Jericho Center, 05465. Arrangements are in care of Gifford Funeral Home, Richmond.
