Title: Lots Of Trees Down From Today's Storm
Post by: Henry on July 18, 2008, 05:57:24 PM
A storm came through Fairfax a little after 3 p.m. here in Fairfax with some heavy rain, winds and some pretty good lightening.  Our lights blinked a few times, but stayed on.  Understand a barn has blown down on Route 108 in Bakersfield and some roads up in Fletcher/Cambridge are impassable because of a huge number of trees down.  Fairfax has some trees down up in North Fairfax - Anyone with more information or photos??

Fox 44 had a video of the barn that blew down on Route 108 in Cambridge.  It also blew some of the roof off the house.  They panned across a hill and it showed hundreds of trees broken off above the ground very similar to the storm that hit Fairfax back in 1973 and broke the trees in the BFA Forest across from the Claude Rainville place here on the Fletcher Road.  The area looks familiar to me, but can't place just where on Route 108 it is.  I am sure Fox 44 will have it on again tonight at 10 p.m.

I had hoped they would put the video up on their website, but they didn't.

At 7:34 a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Northeastern NY,
so we're not out of this yet.

I am on duty with City of St. Albans fire department today, when we got hit about the same time.  We responded to a dozen calls inside of 35 minutes including one building struck by lighting with some outside damage.  At one point responding from a call on Lake Street to Upper Gilman Street, crossing over South Main the water was about 12 inches deep with the storm drains unable to keep up with the volume.  We also had hail about quarter size hail pelting the fire engine when we were dispatched for the first couple of calls.  I know I heard Fairfax out a couple of times during the storm, hope the evening is a little quieter but northwestern NY does not look promising at this time.

Up here in No. Fairfax we had a good size limb come down along with a few others a  small tree. The big limb(about 18" at base) smashed down into our small pond, after taking out the trellis bench nearby of course. That was definately the strongest storm I have ever seen in my life! BTW, if any one wants some free wood, bring your chainsaw to 2728 Main, we'll be around most of Saturday.
