The Gannett Company, owner of many newspapers across the country is eliminating 1000 jobs. It is the owner of The Burlington Free Press among others and The Free Press stated in yesterday's paper that 6 people would be informed of layoffs there.
The lack of advertising has been quite noticeable on some days when the paper was hardly larger than the Messenger, yet covers the whole state, not just Franklin County.
Declining advertising and circulation have been blamed.
