Hi Henry,
Took a trip to NY state yesterday, with my brother, Pete, and his family, and saw this critter. We were not able to determine for sure if it was a grey fox or coyote. It was bigger than our red fox, but not as big as coyotes I have seen VT. It was in a meadow about noon time,hunting, and did not seem to be concerned with traffic stopping to watch. It was reddish about the neck and head with a black tip on its bushy tail. I couldn't see a dark stripe on it's back, but was quite grey on it's sides. Maybe some of your forum members can determine which it is.
