Title: Bet The Neighbors Don't Eat Blueberries
Post by: Henry on August 20, 2008, 10:15:06 AM
Some Richmond residents are upset by a blueberry farm that uses a cannon to scare away birds that eat its crop.

About 20 residents have petitioned the select board to keep the Owl's Head Blueberry Farm from using the propane-fired device during the morning and evening.

Toby Buxton and other neighbors say the cannon begins firing shortly after 6 a.m. from late July through August.

One of the farm's owners, Lawrence Cobb, says the cannon had been a part of the farm's integrated pest management program for years.

Cobb says he's sorry the cannon bothers some people, but it's legal. He says the cannon is fired at times when the birds do the most damage.

The select board didn't act on the petition.

Mr Cobb said using the device was legal.  It may be legal to use it, but I'm almost positive that there's certain times it CANNOT be used as above agriculture is the Quality of Life for residents that trumps it.  If the birds are up that early, perhaps so should be some quiter farm equipment to address them until say 7:00 or 8:00 on weekdays and 8:00 or 9:00 on the weekends.

I know fairfax has an ordinance about loud noise, don't see why other towns can't have one too.

I'm pretty certain I'd make a lot of ruckus about something like that - i get so little sleep as it is, anything affecting it unneccesarily woudl receive my full attention until it stopped.

Welcome to the New America.

I lump these people in with those who move near an airport and complain about the noise.

I have blueberries and I use netting, no noise and a good blueberry crop.  When I was picking blackberries this weekend, there were alot of gun shots in the woods I was hoping bullets wouldn't come flying my way . Our land is all posted and I believe even shooting towards posted land is illegal.  I was tempted to call the game warden, but what could he do seeing as it is not hunting season yet.  I think shooting for no reason is also disturbing the peace.  I understand you have to sight in your rifles for hunting season but not for hours on end.

HOW DO WE GET A NOISE ORDINANCE IN FAIRFAX?  IT IS WAY OVER DUE THAT WE HAVE ONE!  I KNOW THE EXCUSE WAS THAT THEY HAD NO ONE TO INFORCE IT. WHEN YOU CALL THE STATE POLICE THE FIRST QUESTION THEY ASK IF DO WE HAVE AN ORDINANCE AND I HAVE TO SAY NO SO THEY IGNORE THE COMPLAINT. IF OUR TAXES ARE PAYING FOR THE PATROLLING SHOULDN'T WE GET OUR MONEYS WORTH?

I guess i misunderstood what the Town CLerk told me when i called about a barking dog on my property.  Or was it the state police or constable when i calld about the barking dog on my property at 5:00 in the morning.
I KNOW they told me that there is an ordinance that dogs be leashed when not on their property AND if they're not trained to stay on the property, they need something to keep them from leaving it.

Boy would it be nice to have quiet from say 10:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
