We had our Haz Mat day this past Saturday and to the best of my knowledge, the only thing that you could dispose of free was Metal. Brought up on this forum was the disposing of old tires and someone asked the question as to whether we have a free day for getting rid of old tires.
Our Fairfax cost for disposing of tires is:
Car Tires $4*; Truck Tires $5*; Tractor Tires $10*; Heavy Equipment Tires $20*. Rims must be removed from tires.
It was also mentioned that other towns have this free day for getting rid of old tires, but I was unable to find anyplace where this was mentioned. I know that years ago, the State of Vermont had some experimental work done on the highways where they used chipped up rubber from tires for the highway, however don't know if you could get rid of your tires to them that way then or not.
You go around and see where farmers have tires on huge sheets of plastic covering their chopped hay/corn, but looks like they all have enough for what they need. Would be interested in hearing if anybody has a good way of disposing of tires (I don't mean throwing them in the river or beside the road in some secluded spot), for less than the prices indicated above our our Fairfax Haz Mat Day.

Henry,
It is sponsored by CCSW and usually is at the drop off points for them.
They also take other stuff also on those days although not all is free.
I think they have it twice a year.
I have dropped off tires for free in Milton, Richmond and Hinesburgh on these days

Yes, those are sponsored by Chittenden Solid Waste District.... And they most likely don't do that here because Fairfax is not part of their organization.
