Boves started making their own Italian Sauces back in 1996 with the label "Boves of Vermont" on the label. The business took off and they had to find a larger place to manufacture it, so found a place in Rochester, NY
Seems that that the Vermont Consumer Fraud Inquiry frowned on the fact that the label said "Boves of Vermont" and also that the tomatoes came from California. Bove's was fined $50,000, plus a civil fine of $5,000, along with having to remove "Of Vermont" off the label.
Boves insists they meant no harm and I believe them. They also negotiated the fine to be $50,000 of food donated to The Vermont Food Bank. Later the family decided they would make it $100,000 worth of food to The Vermont Food Bank.
I know that our Vermont Food Ventures down here in Fairfax Village helps people get started in food businesses for themselves. Sure hope they also help them stay out of possible trouble in situations like Bove's got into.
