In one town here in Vermont, a very worthwhile organization had asked for some money from the town. People waited for someone to get up and say something, however, nobody did. The money was voted down after someone got up and said, if somebody is asking for Free Money, they really need to have somebody here speak for the cause.
A similar situation happened here in Fairfax on another item that came up for vote. Apparently a petition was circulated to do the whole sidewalk thing from Hunt Street to Nan's Mobil. The item was put on the warning, but come Town Meeting Day, there was nobody there to speak for the situation. Although I doubt the $500,000 item would have been voted through in these economic times, its a good idea to have a representative for the cause whenever you are asking the voters for something.
