Title: No Robins Nest, But Kildeer Nest Photos From JoAnne
Post by: Henry on April 06, 2009, 06:51:17 PM
Hi Henry,

Last years robins nest that I had in my yard was much later in the season. It was probably a second hatch. I didn't get pictures. I do have pictures of a kildeer nest. It was on the South Hero end of the Sandbar bridge, last June. I almost stepped on it . The parents were making a racket to distract me from the nest, or I never would have looked for it. The eggs really blend in.

JoAnne

They build their next in the sand behind my daughter's house every year and when I go around with the lawnmower, they try to attract my attention and lead me away from where the nest is.  They are almost impossible to see.

They also used to nest on top of the school when there were rocks up there. What a noise they can make.

What wonderful photos, Joanne.  I have always watched and waited for the killdeer to return, and have had them chase around me to distract me from their nests, but have never seen either nests or eggs!  Thank you.

We have one nesting in the parking lot of my fire departments station.  Got it all coned off so they can nest in peace.

Not sure that many people can notice it, but out in the back lawn on my sisters land, she always leaves the lawn unmowed where the kildeer are.  They build their nest there ever year.  I don't believe I have ever seen the little ones though.

Hi Henry,
I saw one set of baby kildeer. They look like dandelion fuzz on toothpicks. When they hatch, they have to be ready to run, and do. They stay at the nest, only a very short time. With the nest on the ground, they would be very vulnerable if they couldn't keep up with their parents.
