Title: Greenish teal van drops off garbage bags at end of our driveway
Post by: dearon on June 10, 2009, 06:47:55 AM
Just had a greenish van drops several bags of garbage off at the end of our driveway....what nerve.  We live on Main St. by the bridge an people seem to think it's a drop off.  Anyone know of a greenish van in the area (or maybe in a nearby town)  A woman was the driver.  I think someone should come and get the bags to see if there is anything identifying the person.  I certainly don't want to do it.

When Judy Cleary was on the Selectboard, she told me that in a similar situation they had gone through some garbage and found identifying information and contacted the person who had done it.  She suggested that people contact them and let them know as people in surrounding towns pay for their own garbage removal.  I think if you call Suzanne at 849-6111 she will let a member of the Selectboard know, if they wish to pursue this.

I agree with Henry....although after finding out who's trash it is, I think you should return it to sender!

When I worked out in Williston we had to lock our dumpsters at night or they would be full by morning. Several times I did go thru the bags and call the owners to come get the trash. When recycle prices where higher we would get people that would empty the cardboard dumpster at night. Since we got paid for the recyle had to chain that dumpster as well.

Isn't it theft of services as well?  I mean they're not a resident of our town and yet they're reaping the benefit of living in this town which really isn't a benefit but something factored in our taxes.....

I've been noticing extra garbage at the end of our road for a couple months now, I thought it was my daughters as she rents an apartment from us.  After seeing this today I called and asked her how many bags she had and what they looked like.  I went down and checked out what was extra and found a partially filled black garbage bag and a white garbage bag packed full neither of which were from our residences.
This person must be doing this quite frequently as they got out of their van walked over to the passenger side and took the garbage out of the side of their van, so they would not be seen from the road.  I don't understand why they picked the end of our driveway as the subdivision has a pile out there and would not be noticed as much (of course there is a residence/business across the road from this area)
You bet next week I'll be waiting 7:45 was the time today.  Our tax dollar pay for this and the more people we can catch, as I'm sure this is not the lone person doing this, the less we will all pay.
We have had a problem for years at our office on Route 7.  We used to have totes for our tenants and noticed an overflow each week.  Since we've switched to a locked dumpster, things have changed considerably.
What so people won't do to save a couple of dollars

There is a theft of services law, but I don't know what the fine is.  One good one I heard is take the garbage to a pull off on the interstate and leave it there.  Then the state police will get them for littering

I like the idea of checking the bags for identifying information.  IF found, return it all to the offenders front steps with a note handed to them in person or taped to their door informing them that their illegal dumping will be reported to the State police the next time it is found.

Gives the language of 24 V.S.A 2201 - the legislation regarding illegal dumping.

(b) Prosecution of violations. A person who violates a provision of this section commits a civil violation and shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than $500.00 . This violation shall be enforceable in the judicial bureau pursuant to the provisions of chapter 29 of Title 4 in an action that may be brought by a municipal attorney, solid waste management district attorney, grand juror, or designee of the legislative body of the municipality, or by any duly authorized law enforcement officer.

(c) Roadside cleanup. A person found in violation of this section may be assigned to spend up to 80 hours collecting trash or litter from a specified segment of roadside or from a specified area of public property.

I think we should pursue illegal dumping as a town.  Maybe we could get some free public servants to help keep our roadsides clean.

Because the "dumping" is being done from a vehicle, there are also motor vehicle violations involved - fines, and possible license suspension.
