Rising waters have closed Pettingill Road in Essex, and police are advising drivers to avoid North Williston Road, as well.

Pettingill Road runs north from Vermont 128 into Westford. The road was closed as of 6:15 p.m. Monday as the Browns River spilled over its banks, Essex police said.

North Williston Road was closed on and off throughout the afternoon as water from the Winooski River flowed through cornfields north of the river and across the road, police said. Although the road was open at 6:15 p.m., police dispatchers advised drivers to select alternate routes.

Water also covered parts of Vermont 128, but the road remains open and passable so long as drivers use caution, police said.
