Title: Fairfax Fire & Rescue Toned Out To Falls For Overturned Canoe
Post by: Henry on July 04, 2009, 06:56:39 PM
Fairfax Fire & Rescue are up at Fairfax Falls for a report of an overturned canoe.  I did not see it, but one of the firemen told me it had gone over the falls and was near the power station.  I haven't heard any more as I have not been near my scanner.  The fireman also mentioned that they were going to check with the canoe rental place in Cambridge to see if they might have lost a canoe.

By the time I got home, posted this note, answered a phone message, the scanner was quiet.  It is not my intent to post something and leave you in the air, but unfortunately, I have heard nothing recently on the scanner, so apparently nothing significant happened, thank goodness.

Let's hope it was an empty canoe to begin with.

Looking for an unofficial outcome to the canoe search & rescue last night - Things that happen on a holiday weekend rarely make the news media - I think in the future my best bet will be to stay home and listen to my scanner as I don't like to bother the firemen or rescue or get in their way.

We found nothing. Unfortunatly who ever saw something in the river did not stay to talk to us. We searched around the river banks before and after the dam and could see nothing. All we saw was a lost pool noddle.
If you see something and make a 911 call on your cell phone please hang around to talk to emergency personnel. it will only be a few more minutes of your time and could answer alot of questions for use.
What did you see?
Where did you see it?
What was its last location?

Thanks for responding to the post Dean along with some do's and don't's in calling 911.  I called 911 a number of years ago at exit 18 in Georgia to report a car on fire in the meadow during deer season.  Unfortunately I don't know my own cell phone number, but I did give them my name and I believe they had my cell phone number so were able to call me back if needed.  Besides Fairfax Fire & Rescue, I did hear Milton Water Rescue also being called before I left for the Falls which is just a short ways from me.

Lots of responders there already when I got there - Fairfax is very fortunate to have such well trained, well organized groups for these emergency situations.  I am sure even though nothing was actually found, some good experience was gained.

I have been a volunteer Fire Fighter for 24 years now and learn something still on every call. Henry you are always welcome on our scenes, you are VERY good at staying out of the way and only talking too us when we are not too busy. As far as reporters go you are one of the best at playing nice.
