The pesky low pressure which has overstayed its welcome over the past week will finally give way for a decent day on Sunday. Temperatures will still be relatively cool for July, with highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s. It will be rather chilly Sunday night, with a few low 40s likely for the sheltered valleys.
Another system will catch up to us Monday afternoon, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Showers will continue on Tuesday, then dry conditions will return for Wednesday and Thursday.
Lows in the 40s maybe doesn't seem reasonable, but I do remember one year when my tomato plants froze on July 4th. I wished I had recorded the date & year. That is the only time I ever remember having a frost that late in my little frost pocket here.
Another year we had a frost hard enough to freeze all the new growth on my blue spruce trees. I called the extension service and they told me that it would do no harm, that it would only stop the growth of the branches for that year.
I always envied those individuals that lived near the river or lake who used to plant their gardens in early May and never worry about a frost then or shortly after labor day.
