Title: Riverberry Farm Hit With Hail Damage Yesterday
Post by: Henry on July 17, 2009, 04:42:49 PM
Hi all,

Happy Summer....sort of, still waiting for summer weather!  Crops are generally delayed by the lack of heat and then yesterday we had a significant hail storm that damaged lettuce, spinach, zucchini, summer squash, kale and collard crops.  This is pretty significant loss for the farm, but it really is our firs! hail damage, so we have been lucky.  The NRCS crop insurance inspector came out today to see if the loss will qualify for any disaster relief.  Meanwhile, the stand will be pretty sparse on the before mentioned crops.  The corn plants were shredded, so we'll see what that will mean.  Cabbage and other crops that are still developing were hit hard too, but may grow out of it.   Guess this is the "community supported" part of the CSA.  We appreciate your patience as we sift through the damage.  Fortunately, many crops were delayed by the lack of heat or the damage could have been worse.  A mixed blessing of sorts.

Meanwhile, the stand is now self-serve, which we do every year when we are done with pick-your-own strawberries.  Please excuse the next couple weeks as we are doing some rewiring for the credit card and CSA card machine and will be replacing some more decking.

The raspberries are still not quite ripe yet.  We will send out an email when we are ready for picking.

Our Website:  riverberryfarm.com (http://riverberryfarm.com)  is a good place to go to see what is in the stand.  We try to update it on Mondays for what is stocked in the stand.

CSA Members:  Please try to use your card as much as you can.  It really reduces the amount of extra "office" work... we would rather be farming.

Sorry if this all feels like bad news.  It really isn't that dire, just a rut in the road.  We'll get it smoothed out and be rolling smoothly soon!

We continue to thank you for all your support,
Jane and David, kids and crew.
