Post by: Henry on September 16, 2009, 11:24:00 AM
An 8-year-old from Cambridge is safe and sound this morning after wandering into the woods late Tuesday afternoon.

The child was reported missing just before 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. A number of agencies responded including Vermont State Police, Cambridge Rescue, Cambridge Fire, a Border Patrol helicopter crew, Colchester Police, Fish and Wildlife and a K-9 search team. After a six-and-a-half hour search the child was found by a K-9 and a Vermont State Police Search and Rescue member about three-quarters of a mile from his home in a heavily wooded area. The child was in good condition and was reunited with his parents.

I remember being lost deep in the woods with my brother, we were probably 10-12.  My brother climbed the tallest tree he could find so we could get oriented and try to find our way back.  We were lost all of an afternoon and being  farm kids my parents never thought to look for us as we always wondered off and played.   It's amazing how you can go in circles over and over. Long story short we found a fence line and followed it to the end.   I now carry a compass with me when I go into the woods sure helps get your bearings.
