FAIRFAX, Vt. (AP) -- Colchester Superintendent Armando Vilaseca, who is stepping down in June, is the top candidate in the search for superintendent of the Franklin West Supervisory Union.
Vilaseca would replace Phil Higgins, who has been superintendent for six years and plans to step down in June.
Vilaseca announced in December following a teachers' strike that he was resigning as Colchester superintendent because of differences of philosophy with the school board.
The Franklin West Supervisory Union includes Georgia Elementary and Middle School, Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax, and Fletcher Elementary School.
A forum was held Monday for the public to meet and question Vilaseca.
BFA-Fairfax Principal Scott Lang, who is a member of the superintendent search committee, praised Vilaseca.
"He's very bright, very energetic," Lang said. "He's all about kids. I think he makes a very solid candidate for our superintendent."
The FWSU board plans to announce its formal choice on Wednesday.
