Title: So How Do You Pronounce Chile??
Post by: Henry on February 28, 2010, 08:31:55 AM
Was listening to the broadcasts about the earthquake in Chile and noticed that they pronounce it Chill A whereas I have always pronounced it Chilli like in chili sauce.

The first time I heard it was on Fox 44 whose reporters have a problem sometimes pronouncing local towns, but then heard it again on Channel 3.  I thought it would be simple to look it up on the Internet, but was unable to find it there.  Not a big deal, but interesting that after all these years I should hear it pronounced differently.

Watching CNN yesterday their Embassador pronounced it "Chee-lay" with the emphasis on the first syllable.  My guess is he's right.  :-)

That's the way Fox 44 and Channel 3 pronounced it too Margie - Too late in life for me to change the way I have pronounced it all my life - I can try, but by the time I concentrate on the pronounciation, I will forget what I wanted to say about it. Thanks for the clarification though Marge.

We would say Chill--ee in English, but the proper way to say it in Spanish would be Chil-a with the sound of the 'a' being long as in april.

We said surfs up, 6 inches...

Sitka and Kodiak SAID they had waves from the tsunami. But they would not have noticed if they were not alerted.

My phone and tv were going off like mad.
If a tsunami would have HIT me... we would have HUGE issues......
