Title: What, Nothing About The Red Sox & That Other Team??
Post by: Henry on April 05, 2010, 08:30:26 AM
Everybody must be exhausted this morning after their Easter Weekend - I was sure I would see something on the forum about the Long Awaited start of the new Red Sox season.  I did not see the end, but believe it was Red Sox over Yankees 9 to 7.

My wife informed me this morning that the Red Sox have a perfect season so far.

I responded that NOW they have nowhere to go but down....

Always one for an argument, I am.  I think I've been hanging around with Eskimo Mike too much.

Henry     I'm not able to get NESN on our Cable Setup BUT, I subscribe to the MLB Extra Innings program which provides me with most of the Sox Games, except those blacked out by ESPN, Fox or the Rays broadcast of all Rays Games. This MLB Extra Innings schedule starts Tuesday and typically, I have a choice of a dozen or more games every day.
The difficulty of watching the Sox-Rays as described by the Rays Broadcasting team whether at Fenway or Tropicana Field, or by viewing at least a third of the Sox games with an announcing team not from NESN ( where have you gone Jerry Remy ? ) is offset by my pleasure at being able to watch a wide variety of games , whether played on the West Coast or wherever, whether  early afternoon or late at night.  I'm not thrilled by Pittsburg at San Francisco at 1 am , but when I can't sleep it's almost better then watching Mash reruns for the 30th time on TV-LAND.
Not even Joe Morgan ( the culprit who knocked in the winning run in the ninth inning at Fenway in the 1975 World Series ) could dissuade me from watching our Sox overcome the Evil Empire last night. Wonderful !!!  Now I can begin to worry about Lester against Burnett Tuesday night.
Wish Francona ( or Francoma as I like to say at times ) would answer my calls, with my great suggestions !!! By the way, don't let your husband switch the channel, Maryanne ....... As Chris says ( and Bernie Kuhn used to ) , KEEP YOUR SOX ON !!!

Sox in first place; Yankees last....what a beautiful picture. I'm sure it will change many times over the season, but right now I'm reveling in it. (Is reveling a real word?)

Hate to bring this up.  But who's the other team now ?  Must be my Rays --- Who's in first place now ??

This may be my only time to bring this up ---  next week,  the Rays could be in last --- :-)

Looks like MSM was correct....the Rays did it to the Evil Empire last night and are in first place.......legitimately....at least for awhile.
Meantime, Francoma chose to pitch to a player who had gone 3 for 3 ( with first base open ) and Bard promptly grooved a pitch to make him 4 for 4..... Lots of second-guessing in the Nation today , even from Jerry Remy.
Rays-Yankees on Fox TV today. Should be a good one.

For those diehard Sox fans who stayed up late last night until the Sox prevailed in Seattle, the game showed what type of team they are while they're waiting for the rest of the 10 players on the Disabled List to come back.
The truth is that even with their full team back , they are probably no better then a third place team in the AL East, BUT they certainly aren't throwing in the towel yet. Much teeth-grinding last night when they gave up a five run lead in the 9th, almost lost it in the 12th and then pulled it out in the 13th.  Anyway, Sleepless in Dade City has replaced Sleepless in Seattle in this house !!!

When I am working nights, I watch Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN2. Earlier this spring, Mike Greenberg was talking about the Red Sox, who weren't doing well when the season started. Mike mentioned being in Boston for a book signing. At one point he took a cab to get somewhere.
Mike said, "If you want to know how a team is really doing, ask a cab driver in that city. The driver and I were talking sports, and I asked 'How about the Red Sox?' The driver didn't miss a beat. 'Not this year' was all he said."

Being a baseball fan, from Little league through the major leagues, watching games at St. Leo's College ( 5 miles from here, with a student population about the size of St. Michaels's  but a far better baseball program ) or on the MLB Cable System , certainly is entertaining , but my heart has belonged to the Red Sox since 1946 . However, Mike, I have to agree with the Cab Driver in Boston..not this year...on the other hand, just in case, I'll still hope that Jerry Remy is correct when he says that they will be contenders again when they get people back ( which might be 2011 ).
The Evil Empire is looked on fondly in the Tampa Area , Dennis, where George lived, second to the Rays of course , but as Gary said the other day, Billy Martin , if alive , might have a different twist to the eulogy given by Jeter if he was alive ( I think he was fired 4 times and hired five by King George ) .
If you enjoy Mike & Mike, their book is quite entertaining , titled ( what else ? ) Mike and Mike....I borrowed it from the local library and really enjoyed it .  Sox - Mariners in about 10 minutes, accompanied by popcorn and beer.

If you look at the team averages (pretend there is no distinction in leagues and divisions), you'd see that the Sox are a damn good team, even with so many players on the DL.

the analyst on espn were talking not long ago about realignment because the three best teams in baseball are all in one division. how would you like to be toronto not to mention poor baltimore, and one team will not make the playoffs who maybe should. what are your thoughts ? i say leave well enough alone.
Title: Re: What, Nothing About The Red Sox & That Other Team??
Post by: Dick Brown on July 26, 2010, 10:15:07 AM
My two cents, for what it's worth.....The ESPN Analyst is most likely presenting a Northeastern point of view , ie, trying to project league parity while trying to even out the opportunities in the future for the Sox, Rays and the Jays to compete in the postseason . The only factor, in my opinion, that the other 9 AL clubs would want this realignment is increased chances of expanding attendance if they competed against the Yankees or the Sox 10 times a year at home as opposed to 4. However , as one might have noticed four of the clubs in the other divisions have significantly improved themselves this year, especially Nolan Ryan's leadership group with the Rangers , and they would all, again in my opinion, be reluctant to give up the opportunity for post-season play in order to gain possibly more people in the seats at their stadiums. Texas, Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit all have a good chance for the playoffs, and in fact, could win their division or even the wild card if the Rays fall off. We saw last year where the Angels bested the Sox easily and they really haven't been significantly hurt by Free Agency yet ( Guerro not withstanding ), so there are at least five clubs out there who would not agree with that ESPN view.....and slow-mo Selig certainly isn't about to make any such changes.
Epstein's February statement " that this will be a bridge year " has kind of come true, even though even he couldn't have forseen the extent of the injuries the Sox have endured and the ability of his farm system to fill gaps and keep them competitive . So , as we used to say about the old Brooklyn Dodgers, wait until next year !!! In the meantime, Buchollz, Lackey and Beckett pitch against the Angels this week, with Martinez perhaps catching tonight.........pass the popcorn & beverage please , Dennis.

My daughter is so excited!  This weekend she is moving to Brookline (fresh out of college and got a job there) and she is ONLY 10 MINUTES FROM FENWAY PARK!  In the past, she has been only an occasional watcher of baseball; but I'm sure now she'll become a Red Soxs fanatic in no time at all.

Want to see a Sox game at Fenway?

I have 4 tickets to the Sunday afternoon (1:35 PM) game on September 19 against Toronto.

Two seats are same row, with a few seats between. I have always had good luck if I've asked folks to move one seat over one way or the other. So, two seats in the grandstand behind the Sox dugout:
Section 15
Row 7
Seats 1 & 8

Two tickets in the Right Field Roof Box Seats (I love it up there) They are not together, but it's pretty easy to spend time together while enjoying a beer or standing behind the seats. Personally, I go for the game. The company is with me on the ride down and back and intermittently during play.
Roof Box Section 31, Row B, Seat 5
Roof Box Section 35, Row A, Seat 8 (yup, front row!)

With fees and handling, I paid about $60 each. I was hoping to get $75 each, but make me an offer.....

Margo, Will have to wait and see what her schedule is before I commit to the tickets.  She has a job where she is on-call 1 weekend a month and since she doesn't start until Monday, she doesn't know her schedule yet.  Will let you know, if she's free and wants to go.

Just finished reading a book entitled " Cardboard Gods " written by Josh Wilker, who grew up in East Randolph , Vermont and used to collect baseball cards at the  Country Store in that town and also at Floyd's General Store in Randolph Center.  Baseball fans will enjoy it, I think , especially since his " growing up time " was in the early 70's and Yaz was his favorite player. Some of his hours were spent working on a neighbor's farm, Buster Olney 's folks place. The same Buster Olney who now is a major contributor to the ESPN Shows " Baseball Tonight " and " Sportscenter ". Lots of little-known facts about the game in this novel written by a former Vermonter.

sounds like a good book. my "growing up time" is in the same time period and my brother and i collected a few baseball cards in the early and mid 70's.  i have no clue where they are now. my mom may have disposed of them or they may be still in my old room somewhere. at the time we were not very educated on collecting cards, so being red sox fans that was all we looked for. all others were not treated so well. we may have lost a fortune. my dad was not a red sox fan and he really did not like yaz. my dad was a dodgers fan. the dodgers won the world series in 1988, the year my dad died. i always thought he had a hand in that, seeing as they were underdogs that year....remember kirk gibson. any ways sounds like a book i would like to read, barnes and noble here i come.

Congratulations Chris for keeping Tony C.'s card around .....I believe that he was the youngest player ever to hit a grand slam for the Red Sox ( perhaps in 1966 or 1965 when he was barely 20 years old , I think ) .
In 1973 my son Jeff managed to get on the field at the Red Sox Spring Training Camp in Winter Haven and get Yaz's autograph. We had it laminated and he kept it in a special place. When we were moving out of Fairfax in 1981, and Jeff was away at college, his mother decided to " get rid of a few things " and the signature went into the trash apparently along with his card collection. I'm not sure who was more upset, Jeff or I when the loss was discovered.

Yaz, Freddie Lynn and Jim Rice and big kid, Carlton Fisk --- my personal favorites in the '70s -- although they have been replaced by the local Good Guys ... Carl Crawford,  Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and some very nice young pitchers,  Price,Shields and Garza ..with a new up an coming star,  Jeremy Hellickson .. All players Red Sox would love to have -- and players the Evil Empire would love to pay too !!  Don't be surprised if Carl Crawford is playing LF for the Evil Ones Next Year !  But we need to win a World Series in Tampa Bay First !!!   Go Rays

As a kid, Mom and Dad made a few trips to Winter Haven with us girls to see Spring Training.  I also got Yaz's autograph Mr. Brown! One of my favorites.  Some others I got and treasure are Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Lou Tiant, Gary Allenson, Rich Gedman, Butch Hobson, and Ted Williams was in the crowd and I ran up and asked for his too!

It was so much fun and wonderful family memories to go watch a Red Sox game!

Dennis              Is it true that it takes 3 Bruins to score a goal against Montreal ???? One to pass the puck, one to shoot the puck and one to knock the goalie out of the crease ????

no one needs  to touch a montreal goalie to have him falling to the ice and writhing in "pain". they would be better suited playing world cup soccer, or take up acting professionally. also if memory serves correctly mario tremblay and ivan lambert were very good at knocking goalies out of the way and more often than not the officials were inept idiots, actually they still are. i could not play pro hockey cause i would be in the penalty box all the time for arguing with those morons. any way redsox won buchholz should pitch every other day. right now i'm suffering from beckett belly, every time he pitches i get sick to my stomach.

Am up in Illinois at my son's house and just got caught up on reading the Boston Globe ( & Henry's Forum ) on line, of course. The Sports section in the Globe reports that Beltre got ejected Wednesday night for trash-talking to the Seattle Pitcher from his position at third base while warming up for the top of the third inning...the thing was that they were trash talking in Spanish and the first year ump thought they were talking about him , which they may have been doing, but since he ( the ump ) can't speak that language , he kind of jumped the gun !!!!    Wonder what the League Office will do about this ???  Sox-Rays tonight.....good night to Sox hopes for wild card ???????

Dennis    Thanks for asking. He lives about 20 miles from Chicago in the NW Suburbs and is probably the only die-hard Red Sox fan within 100 miles. Maybe he'll have more to be excited about tonight after Bucholtz buzzes the Rays.....or maybe not. Whatever, he has NESN, so at least I am assured of listening to Remy & Orscillo.
By the way, I heard on ESPN that Bucholtz & Lester are leading the AL in ERA percentage.....the bad news is that there's a significant gap between they and the other three starters for the Sox , and therein lies part of the story.
The Rays have trouble putting 20,000 fans in their park every night ( built for 45,000+ ) , not because there isn't interest in their team, but no one wants to experience traffic problems in Tampa & St. Pete before and after the game . It'll be awhile before an event like having to attend a game at Fenway ( in spite of expensive seats, expensive parking, expensive concessions and depressing losses ) takes precedent in Central Florida as it does in new England . TV viewership and fan interest are extremely high though AND they are an exciting team that plays good baseball.

Henry    This morning's Boston Globe has a real positive outlook for it's professional sports teams. The Celtics beat the Heat, the Patriots feel good about their record and their chances this Sunday when hosting the Vikings, the Bruins ( boo, hiss ) are playing well and The Sox are looking to pick up Curt Young as their pitching coach           ( whose Oakland staff led MLB in ERA and Innings pitched ). Not much about the Revolution , but professional soccer has always been overlooked in Beantown . All of this can change in a minute, of course, but for today Boston fans can feel good about their world, especially since the Evil Empire firwed their pitching coach ( a Zephyrhills native ) yesterday.

My Mom would have been so pleased that the Heat's Dream team lost to her Celtics for the opening game.  She was not a happy camper about LeBron, Dwade, and trying to stack the deck for the Heat.  She referred to the Heat as the NBA's Yankee team.

So needless to say I was a very happy camper in her honor last night!
