HYDEVILLE - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Betty" O'Day, 73, died June 13, 2010 at her home in Hydeville, with her loving family at her bedside. Betty was born Sept. 25, 1936, in Glens Falls, N.Y., the daughter of Everestus and Chastine (Martin) Breen. She was educated in New York schools, graduating from St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls with the class of 1954. She furthered her education and obtained her nursing degree from Jeanne Mance School of Nursing at DeGoesbrian Hospital in Burlington in 1957, and soon afterwards began her long and fulfilling nursing career. Throughout her career, she was employed at several hospitals which include Glens Falls Hospital, Glens Falls, N.Y., Memorial Hospital, Albany, N.Y. and St. Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson, N.Y. She then moved closer to her home and began employment for 17 years in the Health Services Dept at Castleton State College. Betty concluded her nursing career at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, where she retired after 10 years of employment in 1992. Upon her retirement, she found time for her many interests including participation in local quilting and bridge groups, gardening, travel, and most enthusiastically, family. Betty is survived by her mother, Chastine Breen of Glens Falls, her husband of 48 years, John M. O'Day, whom she married in Glens Falls on Nov. 17, 1962; her four children, Maureen O'Day of Essex, Anne Mayhew and her husband, Jonathan, of Martha's Vineyard, Patrick O'Day and his wife, Debbie, of Fair Haven, Michael O'Day and his wife, Lisa, of Fairfax; her sisters, Louann Penders and her husband, Bill, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Cynthia Hill and her husband, John, of Glens Falls; her brother, Martin Breen and his wife, Peggie, of So. Glens Falls; her two grandchildren, Christopher and Marguerite "Maggie" Mayhew; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton, with Rev. Henry Furman, Pastor, officiating. Burial arrangements in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fair Haven will be made at a later date. There will be no visiting hours. For those who wish, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be offered in Betty's memory to either the Wellness Center at the Castleton Community Center, 2108 Main St., Castleton, VT 05735 or Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, VT 05701. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Durfee Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Fair Haven.
