Fire completely destroyed a horse barn in St. Albans Saturday morning, but fire crews say it could have been much worse. The huge blaze started in one of the older barns at Phoenix Meadows. Four other barns were threatened by the flames, but firefighters kept them from spreading. Three horses were inside the barn when it started.

Two horses managed to escape, but the third one did not survive. The animal's owner tells WCAX News 7-year-old stud Phoenix Meadows O'Ryan was killed.
One person was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. There is no word yet on what caused the fire, but crews say it did not appear suspicious.
