ALDEN D. WALCOTT
ESSEX JCT. - Alden D. Walcott died on July 24, 2010 in Burlington. Born on March 21, 1929 in Glover, he was son of the late Dale B. and Marjorie (Bean) Walcott. Alden had deep roots in Glover, where his father ran the general store. He graduated from Barton Academy and the University of Vermont. He earned a master's degree from St. Michael's College in 1969. In 1952, he began a 39 year teaching career at the Essex Jct. High School, serving as chair of the Science Department for many years. He also coached baseball, soccer, basketball and golf and taught driver education for 25 summers. Alden married Marilyn (Rublee) Sharp in 1957. They shared a home together in Essex Jct. for 51 years. They spent summers at their summer cottage on Shadow Lake in Glover and after retirement, winters in Venice, Fla. Alden enjoyed his family, skiing on a cold winter afternoon, travelling in the US and beyond, gardening, and watching the patterns of nature. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He served as president of local teachers associations and the Chittenden County Teachers Credit Union. He was on the State Teachers Retirement Board for 16 years, serving as chair for 10 years. He was committed to his students and was honored twice as an outstanding educator. The greenhouse at the Essex High School was dedicated to him in May 2010. He leaves his wife, Marilyn; children, Cindy and husband Michael Alger of Grand Isle, Carlton and wife Laure of Essex Jct., Stephen and wife Shari of Fairfax, and Mary and husband Jonathan Lasher of Columbia, Md.; as well as grandchildren, Asa and Emily Alger, Sarah Walcott, Keith Walcott and his wife Kaitie, and Ashley Walcott, Kyle and Jack Gagnon, and Ben and Sophie Lasher; and great-grand-children, Kelcee and Reece Cadorette. Also his sister-in-law, Leah (Rublee) Cramton and nephew, Jeffrey Cramton of Springfield, Mass. He was predeceased by his sister, Charlotte Locke of Barton. The family invites friends to visit with them at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Jct. on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010 during the hours between 1 and 3 p.m. to share memories of Alden's life.
