PRESS RELEASE
St. Albans Police Department
On Thursday, 08/05/2010 at approximately 9:59 PM the St. Albans City Police Department took a report of a tractor trailer, train collision at the Elm Street Railroad Crossing. Fire, Rescue, Police and New England Railroad personnel responded to the scene and subsequently determined that a south bound tractor trailer unit had been struck by a westbound New England Central Railroad locomotive. The semi-tractor unit was pushed approximately 30 feet west of the railroad crossing along the tracks before flipping onto its side. Both diesel fuel tanks on the semi were ruptured in the collision.
The semi unit driver was transported to the NMC by Am Care. The truck driver is listed as stable at this writing. No New England Central Railroad personnel were injured in the accident. Fire personnel contained the spill and were forced to drain the two ruptured tanks. Vermont Haz Mat/VEM and the EPA were notified. EPA personnel plan to inspect the scene tomorrow morning. A Vermont DMV Commercial Enforcement Officer was contacted and will inspect the semi unit tomorrow as well. The road was closed for approximately two hours, but reopened at approximately 12:00 a.m.
