Current News & Events / Photos from the 1941 BFA Fire Remembrance
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:47:20 PM »
35-40 people turned out to remember and hear about the night BFA was gutted by fire back on January 17, 1941.
Henry was there and took some pictures.

One interesting note:
The first issue of the BFA Buzzer was found and it was discovered exactly when the evening basketball games, being played at the old Grange Hall, were interupted as it was announced that the school was on fire.
The girls game was in the third quarter with Highgate leading BFA 36-6 when the game was stopped. The scheduled boys game vs. Milton was not played.
Three members of that girls team were in attendence Monday night- Beverly Stewart Taylor, Louise Bellows Counos, and Joyce Bellows McCuin.

I was at BFA this afternoon, looking for some pictures and some other things to display tonight at the presentation of the 70th Anniversary of the 1941 BFA Fire.
Lo and behold I came upon some new information about that fateful night.
What did I find?
Come to the presentation!
7pm in the old gym at school.

History is a puzzle. Today I found a couple of pieces.

Andy Potter and a photoghrapher(Shelly- didn't get a last name, oops.) came to Fairfax Saturday afternoon to do a Preview of the 70th Anniversary of the 1941 BFA Fire. Andy interviewed myself and Art Webb. Art was one of the first people on scene that night, although there wasn't much to do as the place was already engulfed in flames. Art told Andy about that night and provided some interesting info about life back then. Andy then talked to me. The story will be shown on the Channel 3 News at 6pm Monday night. I hope I sound intellegent. I was trying to be during the interview.

SUNDAY HEADLINES
Whenever a major event happens, I like to scan the front pages section of the Newseum website to see how everyone is covering the event, especially the local media. After the shooting in Tucson, Arizona Saturday, it was the top story most everywhere.

The New York Daily News, however, felt that another story was more worthy of the front page. Everyone has their priorities.

Pictures of the Day

These two pictures were taken Sunday afternoon. Margie and I were on our way to Hannafords in St. Albans. We are on the interstate heading north between the two exits. I noticed that most, if not all, the snow was gone out there. I grabbed my camera out of my coat pocket and snapped a couple of shots.

Looking at this picture, if you hadn't seen it before, and someone handed it to you and made you guess what month it is, you'd probably wouldn't guess early January, would you?

Current News & Events / BFA Fire Anniversary Coming Up-January 17, 2011
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:19:59 AM »
On a cold Friday night, January 17th, 1941, there was an explosion heard all over town. A BFA boys basketball game, being played at the old Grange Hall on Main Hill ended abruptly. Bellows Free Academy was fully engulfed in flames.
That night easily ranks in the top 5 historical moments for the town of Fairfax.
On Monday night January 17, 2011 at 7pm, we will gather in the Old Gym at BFA, and mark the 70th Anniversary of that fire.
I am currently working on putting together a visual presentation, and am looking for people who were there that night and can come and share stories of being there that fateful night. We will talk a bit about the history of the school in general, and the aftermath of the fire.
Everyone is welcome to come. If you know of someone who was there that night, please invite them to attend.

Couldn't decide on a picture of the year, so I settled on this one that Karen McNall took of me, showing how tall the corn was on McNall Road.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW
So, let’s see…..

In 2010......

We lost Rex in March and got Jose in June.
I turned 50.
It snowed, it rained, the wind blew, it was scorching hot.
The Girls Nordic ski team won their first state title.
A bunch of little league softball players were the toast of the town in August when they were playing in the East regional tournament, just missing out on a chance to go to the nationals.
The bridge in the center of town was replaced, making traffic a nightmare for Hunt Street and Maple Street. The poor covered bridge still doesn’t know how many times it got hit.
It rained on the Pie and Ice Cream Social AGAIN!
They continued paving Rt.104 north of the village. Wonder when they will do the village.
The Country Pantry became the Vermont Breakfast Company. I think that happened in 2010. Maybe it was 2009.
The Fire Department has a new tanker. Rescue Squad has a new ambulance. I think they got it in 2010. Maybe that was 2009, too.
My kidneys continue to deteriorate. But I am closer to getting a transplant-18 months?
Now my knee is buggered up again.
Maple Street looks a lot different today than it did a year ago.
There were breakfasts, and dinners, and plays, and concerts.
We lost some good friends in 2010.
I know I have forgotten something. Oh well.
So, what’s in store for 2011?
We mark the 70th anniversary of BFA burning on January 17th. It was 30 years ago that the Varsity girls basketball team won their first state championship.
And 9/11 was 10 years ago. REALLY?????
I’m sure the snow will blow, grass will be mowed, and there will be concerts and plays and such.
But you never know…………..there might be a few surprises. If I knew what they were, they wouldn’t be a surprise.
Happy New Year everyone!!!

WINTER.......WONDERLAND?????
I will agree that it's winter. Not really a wonderland, though.

A couple of shots from the bridge.
