One with a sense of humor not only laughs at what is funny, but also recognizes what is not funny.  By this measure, I think Rev. Elizabeth's likely got one.  This is based solely on this dialogue - I've never met her :).

Current News & Events / Re: Relaxing the Fairfax zoning regulations

FYI:  Both the DRB and Planning Commission are made up of citizens who submitted a letter of interest to the Select Board of the town and were appointed to the position.  ANYONE can submit such a letter when there is a vacancy on either board.  The Select Board screens people to prevent blatant conflicts of interest (eg, developers on the DRB might be considered a conflict, etc.).

If you are truly interested in/concerned about the future of your town, it is your responsibility to keep yourself informed and take advantage of publicly available information.  In my opinion it is no hardship to have to seek that information rather than expecting it to be shouted from the rooftops or printed in bold headlines begging for your attention.  And, if you are REALLY interested, get involved.  Go to the meetings, hearings, etc.  Learn the process. Submit a letter of interest to become part of the process.  Do something.

I'm sitting @ Town Meeting. Looks like it's about to wind down without fireworks. Feels good to flex those voting muscles. Clarice streets

"I just think it is hysterical how people find it so easy to pass judgement on the choices that others make."

I am firmly of the belief that priorities dictate what we do, and if you don't attend TMD, it's a question of priorities. This has nothing to do with passing judgment.  You do what you have to do.  I would stay home too in your situation.  My empathy stops at the notion that you (or me, or anybody else) are somehow disenfranchised by having to make this choice.  BTW, I agree that the big decisions should be made at the voting booth on Tuesday.

Current News & Events / Re: St. Albans Wal-mart Under Appeal ~Again!!!!

Trussell,

I see your points. However, things are pretty regulated around here in general, not just with respect to Walmart.  I come from Montana where there is absolutely no gov't regulation of much of anything, and the results in our cities are New Jerseyesque (no offense meant to anyone from/in/inlovewith New Jersey).  There has to be a balance. If it's simply left to "supply and demand", it seems that the Supply side naturally manipulates the conditions to stimulate the Demand side.  Then you end up with Walmart, McDonald's, Kmart, Target, etc. and all of the original character of the area has faded to the background if not completely disappeared.  On the other hand, if the government oversteps (which I think is often the case), it gets in the way of healthy competition, innovation, and individual liberties.

Based upon all of that (among other things), I come out firmly against the construction of another Walmart anywhere on the planet.  Walmart is no Tractor Supply, or any other moderate sized franchise.  Walmart is an economy and culture changing phenomenon, and not for the better, in my opinion.

Although it's unlikely, I personally hope that the appeals NEVER stop and that Walmart will go away.  A pipe dream, I know.

Julie,

On top of what you said, the few members that have responded are obviously NOT representative of the overall population, as evidenced by the high rate of affirmative responses about voting and attendance at TMD.  My opinion is that we are our own worst enemies in this great Democracy, to which we (collectively) do not show nearly enough respect or appreciation.

While childcare may be a reason for many people, the REAL reason child care issues get in the way (in my opinion) of attendance is a question of priorities.  If people felt it were important enough, they would make child care arrangements.  There is plenty of notice, and somehow we find a way to have our child care needs met if there is something we consider important going on... A trip to Jamaica, a weekend away without the kids, etc.  We collectively don't consider this event important enough to do that kind of planning.  I think it's sad, and I hope it doesn't end up dying out.

I agree with the idea that all large sums should be voted by Australian ballot.  I also think more people should go to Town Meeting.  It drives me nuts when people who don't attend act all victimized because "such a small portion of the voters make these big decisions without any say from the rest of us."

Just my 2 cents.

General Discussion / Re: Public input on ordinances
« on: January 28, 2010, 03:28:15 PM »
I would be strongly against a curfew ordinance.  Way too "Big Brotheresque" for me.

ATV ordinance might not be a bad idea, assuming the intent would be to put rules around responsible and reasonable use of ATVs and not altogether banning them.  I personally hate the things, but wouldn't want to get all "Big Brother" on this one either.

Don't worry, I have no intention of trying to stop you from saying anything.  No double standard here.  We can agree to disagree.  I do find your negativity and condescension annoying, but carry on as much as you want.  I'm a big fan of free speech!

I'd like to point out that there are normal, average, every day people who are opposed to the construction of Walmart in St. Albans (myself among them).  I am not an extremist, a whacko, or an unreasonable person.  I will not apologize for my opinion on this, as unpopular as it may be among the posters here.  I want to let you know that it's not just some fringe group standing in the way of "progress."

Also, I agree with Barbara Murphy's response to Celt in another thread regarding the pot shots at the town government and school on this web site.  Not productive, not helpful, not funny, and unsubstantiated criticism.  It's annoying.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: The Fairfax Problem

Donna,

When we first moved here (~2003), there were definitely some issues between the Selectboard and the Town Clerk, who was not you at the time, I believe.  There was some legal settlement and the problem seemed to have gone away.  I wonder if that's what Markowitz was referring to?

I find the "Blaming the victim" sentiment in the previous post disturbing.  Maybe the guy is a third shift worker, out for a walk on his lunch break.  Maybe he was out getting emergency Tums for his pregnant wife at home.  Maybe he was the designated driver for friends and accidentally locked himself out of the car while helping an especially inebriated friend into their home.  Maybe he was out drinking, was drunk as a skunk, and decided to walk home instead of driving.  Regardless of whether you think that is an appropriate use of a Saturday night, it would be well within a person's rights to expect to do so without being brutalized.  There is no justification for mugging or beating someone on the street like that.
