General Discussion / Re: Corner of River Road and Fletcher Road
« on: May 03, 2014, 04:17:37 PM »
Great question!  I haven't seen any accidents there but, like you, have been in some close calls. Coming down Fletcher Rd, I have seen quite a few cars continue through the River Rd stop sign and the driver hasn't looked to the right. There have also been a number of times I've seen cars that are going up the little hill to River Rd and not slowing or looking to their left to see if vehicles are already turning onto River Rd.  Can be scary and it's truly not that difficult to be aware of other drivers on the road.

Current News & Events / Re: School Budget Voted Down By 1 Vote
« on: April 14, 2014, 08:21:47 PM »
I agree with Mr. Hibbard on this point:
"Also, if a budget is voted down by voters, that is a sign. Our board did not take that seriously. The position taken was that if they made a minor change, their supporters who did not voted would come out and support them. They need to wake up and put together program costs and suggest meaningful options. Cutting utility estimates and positions that weren't staffed anyway are not real cuts when you're adding a position the costs more than all the suggested cuts combined. It's not worth debating costs if they don't take a hard look at costs."

We just cannot cut salaries. As an educator, I am very good at my job, I treat the kids as if they are my own, I love them, I am on committees, stay late at work often, take work home with me often, work on the weekends, work every single summer, buy materials with my own money, take the required (and mandatory) professional development courses, have taken pay cuts and pay freezes, etc. On behalf of others like me, please do not lump all of us together in the 'hate' pile. Of course there are teachers who don't work as hard as others, it is the same in every single profession, every single job.
As far as merit pay, here are my thoughts:  I would never blame my mechanic if my car died (he told me to change the oil), I would never blame my dentist if I got a cavity (he told me to brush and floss), I would never blame the firefighters for not saving a house on fire (family was told to clean the chimney) so I am wondering why would people blame teachers if their child fails? Teachers cannot be held responsible for what happens once children leave the walls of the school. Are they getting a good night's sleep? Are they eating well? Are they doing their homework? Are the parents reading to them, asking questions, engaging them in social activities?  Not quite sure why we blame teachers all the time.

Before we revoted last Thursday I wondered if anyone else had questions about the proposed $85K position. I didn't read any comments about that so can only assume it is ok with the townspeople. It's not ok with me. Has anyone else looked at the FWSU budget? I was curious and saw that regarding the Business Office, salaries in 2012 were $120,586, in FY'15- $196,767.  Continuing Ed/Conf 2012-$928. FY'15-$3000. Mileage '12-$1528, FY'15 $2000, Conferences - '12-$136, FY'15-$3000 (how is this different than Cont Ed/Conf?) Mileage Reimbursement 2014-$2000. Supt. Office budget for Conferences Expenses- $3000. , Continuing Ed $2000. Membership Dues $5000. (would like more info on this), equipment/furniture $1250. (is it really that bad?), Student Support Services Dir - $2000 in mileage reimbursement, $2000 for conference expenses, Curriculum Coordinator- mileage reimbursement of almost $3000.
Just a reminder that  our tax money goes toward Central Office budget as well. Perhaps we could look there for cuts that could be made. School based positions that are not needed should be eliminated. More questions need to be asked.

Current News & Events / Re: BFA SCHOOL BUDGET REVOTE INFORMATION
« on: April 09, 2014, 10:02:36 PM »
Is anyone else wondering why the budget was only reduced by $65,675 but there is an addition of a building level Student Support Administrator for $85,000? I do not agree with cutting teacher's salaries but I do agree with eliminating positions if they are not needed. We have a district Student Support Services administrator...is BFA so large that we need to hire another administrator for just one school? I don't think so. Just a thought as we go to vote tomorrow.

We are  a house divided on the pizza front! We ordered one last week after hearing/reading rave reviews. We loved how big it was and Hubby liked the taste but I did not. I felt the toppings were very skimpy and all I could taste was the sauce.  We will give it one more try and hopefully it will be 2 thumbs up :)

Did I miss the information stating that Maple St, with the covered bridge, is now a 2-way street during the construction? I found out the hard way Monday morning when going to BFA. Geez that was a bit scary.

Current News & Events / Re: Today's St. Luke's Turkey Dinner
« on: November 03, 2009, 03:00:03 PM »
Hi Henry,
Thank you so much for the kind words. Every year so many people help to put on our one and only fundraiser for the church. From the behind-the-scenes help of lugging many, many items to and from the church, to the many hands peeling, chopping , stirring, etc. to the servers on the day of the dinner , we appreciate all the help that is given. Laughter and smiles are always  seen throughout the process of getting ready for our turkey dinner. We thank those of you who participated by coming to enjoy a home cooked meal and to visit with old and new friends. We are looking forward to serving even more people next year!

Current News & Events / Re: Taxes Due
« on: November 17, 2008, 12:07:22 PM »
Hi, thanks for the reminder, it's always good to know our neighbors are looking out for one another! I did want to add my thoughts though. I know that taxes are always due in  November so when I get the bill in August, I tape it to the November calendar page at home. That way the bill doesn't get lost in the never ending piles of paperwork. It really never occurred to me to ask for a reminder, I just figured that was my responsibility as a homeowner.  thanks~~~

Current News & Events / Re: Food & Drink Brought Into BFA
« on: September 11, 2008, 01:55:07 PM »
I would like to repspond to this topic as well. I do not know what it's like to have a child with severe allergies, but I think that I too would educate my child as soon as possible since I would not always be around to protect them. And I know we, as a caring community, will always do what we can to protect children. I was thinking about the other piece of this. My children are at BFA and now are extremely restricted with where, when and what they can and cannot eat. Because there are limited places to safely eat, my children have had to sit on the lunch room floor because there weren't enough chairs for everyone (totally unacceptable). My children have the late lunch so they are required to go from breakfast at our house until 1:00 without eating--also unacceptable. I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same way?? Am I out of line?? I'm really concerned about the health and learning environment of my own kids--- Any ideas?? Thanks
