Thank you, Henry! My daily visits here definitely make me feel like I'm still part of the Fairfax community.

Current News & Events / Re: Could Almost Make You Turn Vegetarian« on: April 08, 2009, 05:46:50 PM »
I also saw Morgan Spurlock's mock-umentary "Fast Food Nation". In my mind it was more of an indictment of mass-processed foods and the manipulative marketing practices of the fast food companies towards children and less of an slant against eating meat. Is being a vegetarian any safer, though, considering the recent safety recalls of raw spinach, peanut butter, and pistachios, just to name a few? It all goes back to safe food handling and processing practices to protect consumer safety.
I don't live in Vermont anymore and don't have a dog in this fight, but nonetheless, here's my question: With this proposal, is Gov. Douglas saying that every other Vt. government employee holds a higher priority and need to the citizens of Vt. than the meat inspectors? 4
Uncle Mike's Thoughts Of The Day / Re: Picture of the Day 3/20/09 and Blog-Radio« on: March 20, 2009, 04:23:16 PM »
I agree with you, Mike. I spent many nights laying awake at night listening to Johnny Most and Glenn Ordway calling the Celtics games on the radio. At times, if the Celtics were on TV, I would turn the volume on the TV down and listen to the radio broadcast, instead.

Current News & Events / Re: DSL Problems With Fairpoint« on: February 06, 2009, 05:10:27 PM »
Keep in mind that my experience relates to Comcast in middle TN, but to be honest, I don't think I could express in polite language my poor opinion of Comcast. For a period of about three years Comcast was the only choice my wife and I had for cable and high speed internet. Their customer service was inept, their response times were HORRIBLE when it came to repairs, and nearly every month we had to call in to have discrepancies corrected on our bill. I became so dissatisfied with Comcast as a company that I cancelled my account, giving up my high speed internet for a period of time simply on principal (I refused to give Comcast another dime of my money). We switched to DirecTV and used a dial-up account for home internet access for the short term. DirecTV has been excellent (we rarely if ever lose our signal and we believe we receive good product value for the cost) and ATT (formerly Bellsouth) has recently provided DSL service to our area, which we now have. I have to be honest - for incurable sports junkies like me, DirecTV is awesome.
That being said, I certainly hope that Comcast is a better provider in the northeast than they are in the southeast. One of my Grandmother's favorite sayings is, "A new broom sweeps clean." Comcast may look enticing and the initial cost for the bundle may seem reasonable, but I wouldn't jump to them strictly based on my dissatisfaction with Fairpoint. I strongly recommend doing some research on Comcast before making any commitments. - Matthew Soule 6

Great suggestion, Suzy! Our division of Penske assigned each of our drivers a pair of Get-A-Grips as part of their personal protective equipment (PPE). The ones we gave out look like galoshes with metal cleats. Just out of curiousity, I googled the name and if you look at www.cozywinters.com, they have several models available for less than $20. Might be worth a look. I'm sure there are other brands out there as well.

Interestingly enough, dry counties still exist in many places here in the south, especially in Tennessee and Mississippi. The most notable in my mind is Moore County, Tennessee. Their county seat is Lynchburg, the home of the Jack Daniels distillery. Nope . . . no irony there.

Current News & Events / Re: These New Front Loading Washers« on: December 03, 2008, 05:52:54 PM »
I agree with fletchtb, Henry. In a bind, you can use 1/3 the recommended amount of regular detergent in lieu of the HE detergent. It should not be a regular practice, though. Heavy suds will also cause your washer to not drain properly. If you run into this problem again, you can try (please don't laugh) 2-3 tablespoons of cooking oil directly into the washer. The oil will give the soap something on which to bind and clear up the suds.

Current News & Events / Re: Gas Prices In New Hampshire Vs Vermont« on: November 14, 2008, 06:09:35 PM »
Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Brown, but upon further review, the municipal/city taxes account for more price variance than the state taxes. In my case, it explains the conistent $.15 - $.20 higher gas prices in Davidson County (Metro Nashville) versus Rutherford County (Murfreesboro area). Looking today, prices in Murfreesboro were down to $1.84, whereas in Nashville near where I work they were $1.99. Supply chain and transportation costs do not account for the variance in price here since nearly all of middle TN's refined gasoline is delivered by one pipeline from Houston. Things like retail margin, volume of gas sold station to station, and local competition I think have more of an impact when looking at the difference in gas prices within the same area, (stations across the street from each other or stations on one side of town versus the other, etc.). So, upon further review, 10 yard penalty and loss of down to me for talking out of my hat.

The low price leader in Murfreesboro, TN is Wal Mart at $1.85. I don't think we pay much difference in gas in TN versus VT or NH, but the difference lies in each state's fuel tax rate.

I'm in sports heaven right now. Sox are going deep in the playoffs, Tennessee Titans are 5-0, Vanderbilt is 5-0 for the first time since WWII (after a stunning win over Auburn), and my most beloved Nashville Predators take to the ice Friday night for their season opener in St. Louis. I'm really looking forward to the Rays-Sox series. Great young core players and pitchers on both teams. I believe we'll be seeing this playoff match up quite often in the future.

Current News & Events / Re: Two Deaths So Far - Should The Police Have Chased??« on: October 06, 2008, 05:18:58 PM »
I'm going to show my naivety here, but according to the article, the driver, Michael Lewis, has a pending charge of "felony aggravated domestic assault", against which he was able to post a $1,000 bond for his freedom. How does a felony aggravated assault of any type only warrant only a $1,000 bond, especially considering the 23 prior convictions against him, including a furlough escape? Will the deaths of two of his passengers be enough to hold him in custody until his trial, or will he be eligible for another $1,000 bond?

Current News & Events / Re: BFA Fairfax Retired French Teacher Mr. Hancox - By Janet Bonneau« on: September 30, 2008, 06:22:52 PM »
Thanks again, Henry, for posting the article here. If my memory serves me correctly, Mr. Hancox smoked Exports and he was always whistling a Rolling Stones or Beatles song next to his classroom door between periods. Funny what you remember . . .

Current News & Events / Re: Nice Article In Tonight's Messenger On Mr. Hancox« on: September 23, 2008, 06:00:49 PM »
I regard Mr. Hancox as one of the finest teachers and mentors I had, college included. Mr. Hancox demanded and received discipline, respect, and excellence from all of his students. I also had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Hancox as the WPM of Franklin Lodge #4 in St. Albans. To echo Mark's sentiment, I also feel truly blessed for having had the opportunity to spend 12 years at Bellows Free Academy.
Also, as an aside to the topic at hand, my warmest regards to Mr. Brown and my hopes that the warm Florida sun is treating him well. Henry - I've tried to find the story in the online edition of the Messenger, but their story selection is quite limited. Is there any way that you could post the article here? Thanks in advance for your consideration. Matthew Soule
