In the few short years I knew Henry (compared to others he knew) I can only add that he enriched my life and showed me being content with one's self & life is what happiness is. The key is knowing what is important to you. Henry did. RIP my friend.

You do realize renters pay the property owner's taxes on the rental with their rent, right? Which is why rent is astronomical compared to having a mortgage. It includes the cost of taxes and things like building repairs, trash removal, yard maintenance, whatever insurance the owner has on the building, as well as a profit for the landlord, who may/may not net much when all expenses are paid...
It's possible to be satisfied with the quality of education AND feel property taxes are too high. The two are not mutually exclusive. I don't know why you would think they are. So far no one has come up with a better way to pay for education so it's wide open to suggestion...I'm sure all ideas are welcome, so whenever your ready, send Montpelier a draft of your best ones.
Do you have some inside knowledge about the political views of renters in Fairfax and how many attended town meeting and filled out a survey? You seem very sure of your nonsensical statement.

Hi Barb,
Has the legislature ever floated the idea of longer terms for legislators? Two years is a short amount of time and really just leaves a perpetual "campaign mode" hanging in the air. I think 3 or 4 years is more suitable for the issues that are dealt with. Maybe it's just election burnout, but really would like to have a lengthier settle down periods before starting up again...
Something to consider for the future.

Thanks, Barb. We need many more Independents, like you, in our state legislature to help eliminate the partisan rhetoric that doesn't really solve anything. The problems we face as a state, revenue wise and in every other way are far more intricate and complicated than talking points and campaign slogans and can't easily be solved with this party or that party's boiler-plate partisan "wisdom."
It's easy to blame the party in power for the current crises, that's as old as politics itself. But only working together on creative solutions, actually benefits the state.
Being a legislator is a thankless job, your efforts to make sense of the process on behalf of your community are much appreciated. Thank you.

I think the best thing that could happen is for UVM to develop some local competition. It has been the "only" level I Trauma Center in the state for too long and sadly, has an attitude that appears to seep into the staff and with all the new "partnerships," is becoming a monopoly. :/

I have to say, of the many years I've lived here, I've never seen Fairfax's trash collection get this much scrutiny and calculation. It's always just slipped by fairly unnoticed, because people liked having the town take care of hauling the trash away--and apparently a majority of voters still feel that way--but this shift has been interesting to witness, when it was not mentioned for years.
Is the focus due to the law that's been enacted and the fact that residents generating trash above a certain amount have to pay more for it?
Having a discussion about such things is definitely a good idea, but after so many years, it's surprising to see the conversation re: taxes and rental units and just wondering what is so different now that has prompted this? The new law, so many new rentals? (Taxes go up every year, regardless, so it would seem a bit of a non sequitur)
Any insight anyone? MK?

Around 8:30pm I received an anonymous call from a heavily accented male claiming he was "tech support" regarding microsoft and there were some issues that needed to be fixed. He gave me some info about where/when I'd purchased my computer to make himself sound plausible. I knew he was going to suggest he access my computer remotely, which I wasn't going to allow, but I wanted to see where he was going. I pushed him hard to tell me what he wanted and he wouldn't give me a straight answer and I kept saying get to the point, what is it we need to do, to fix this so called problem? He walked through opening some menu of microsoft applications, some were running, some were stopped and told me that was the problem. It sounded like BS. and he kept carrying on in stilted English, ma'am this, ma'am that. I told him he wasn't going to access my computer and he just carried on with whatever he was saying about wanting to help me. He asked me to open a browser, so I did and put in a web address, ( http://lmi1.com/ so I did and a screen came up asking for a code and had a download button, I told him I didn't have a code, so he gave me one. I have decent security on my computer, so I wasn't worried about finding out what this was about and sure enough, as soon as I entered the code, there was an alert not to go further unless I knew/trusted the person trying to access my computer. I said, you're trying to access my computer, I don't know who you are, we're done. I hung up and he was still carrying on about his legitimacy. The site that comes up is https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/Customer/Code.aspx. I think it's legit, but not the person calling me. There are any number of people out there who would fall for a scam like that and be hacked, because he did have some accurate info and I did stop and think for a minute. It's entirely possible if he hadn't been such a hack himself, I possibly could have been persuaded. :/

I've seen the rather small signs on the Stowe side, say what you will, but it seems a Very Large sign at the base of the hill is in order. I don't know what's on the Jeff side, but once a truck starts up, it's almost too late.

Eventually they'll figure out they need better signage! I can't believe they haven't already.

I also heard that Linda (?) of Linda's in St. Albans will be opening it and this IS good news. She has good food, a good name, and people who travel to go to her place. Gabe unfortunately, has no interest in keeping a restaurant there--if he did, he would have kept Jack Foley instead of letting him leave and starting the the round robin succession that has followed. His only interest is in how much $$ he can line his own pockets with, not what the residents would like or benefit from. I know there are some who disagree with this view of Mr. Handy, but I see no other way to view it. He doesn't care about the town, because he doesn't live in it Though he did attempt some type of philanthropy with the rescue squad and the new building a few years ago--however, not sure that actually went according to his grand plan, though it did work out fairly decently for rescue.

It didn't fail with the first restaurant-owner Jack Foley of 158 Main in Jeff-he stated that he left because the rent was too high during the off season and the landlord was unwilling to negotiate to keep him there. I didn't speak to him myself directly, but I know the person he said that to. What I do know is there have been about a half dozen other people in there since trying to make it happen and they all fold within a year or so--not because they aren't getting any business--because they always do, but because ?? (maybe the rent is too high??)
I'm sorry, but I see no need to hold that building hostage, when the residents want a restaurant and people have come here in good faith to provide one--repeatedly and it has been proven that a restaurant can succeed and be profitable there....so I wonder what the ulterior motive really is?? To let it repeatedly fail, then sit empty until it's an eyesore so it can be torn down for condos?
The rumor last winter was that Sam had "won" his building back in some suit and was going to reopen. I don't know where that all started, but it hasn't exactly happened...according to Lena, Gabe still owns it, so....??
We don't need any chains, that I can't agree with. There are far too many already.

What a waste. If he can't reopen, then he should consider selling to someone who can. It's possible Jack Foley of 158 Main would be interested--he only left in the first place, because the rent was too high...

Now if only Fairfax had its fireworks back....what a great topper to a perfect day.
Ducky Race results? A longtime Fairfax summer tradition that is still going!
