Beginning Genealogy is the topic of our Saturday, February 10, 2018 class. The class starts at 10:30 AM and goes until 12 noon, the cost is $10 and it is in our conference room at the Vermont Genealogy Library.  A multi-page handout will be included in the class.

Genealogy can seem overwhelming to those who are just getting started. In this introduction to the subject Sheila Morris will discuss records, techniques and best practices for conducting sound research. This talk is aimed at beginners and at those who have already started but are still relatively inexperienced. Sheila will also cover how to organize the records and images that result from your research efforts.

Bring as much information as you can about your grandparents; births, marriages, deaths and where they lived. After the talk our volunteers can help you get started using our many resources.

Sheila Morris is past president of the Vermont French-Canadian Genealogical Society and editor of our journal, LINKS. She has taught numerous genealogy classes at our society as well as at many local libraries as well as assisting visitors with English, Scottish, New England and Quebec research.

This week's talk at 10:30 AM is titled, "Purple Hearts Reunited:  How Military Medals Find a Home" and will discuss a very successful local non-profit that helps the families of military veterans. "Purple Hearts Reunited" was established in Vermont on July 23, 2012, and is the only organization in the country returning lost or stolen medals to veterans and military families at no cost.

Capt. Zachariah Fike, founder of "Purple Hearts Reunited", will discuss how this program got started, how he conducts his research and he'll take the audience through several successful cases. He will also cover the research methods he uses, techniques he has identified and which tools he relies on the most. Please join us to hear about this wonderful project and maybe learn a few new tricks for your research toolkit.

We hope you can join us this week.

Announcements / Upcoming Genealogy Classes for April
« on: April 13, 2016, 05:01:39 PM »

Identifying Your Ancestors Using the FAN Principle       April 16, 2016

Our family trees can contain hard to find ancestors, or those who are hard to separate from people with similar names. Since we need to establish that this is actually our person resolving these cases often involves the use of resources beyond censuses & vital records. One approach is the FAN Principle (Family - Associates - Neighbors), which is also known as 'Cluster Research.' Joanne Polanshek will discuss the basic technique involved, the types of sources to locate and some case studies employing the FAN Principle.

Nosorigines.qc.ca- A Database of French-Canadians       April 30, 2016

Nos Origines has genealogical information on approximately 1 million people with Canadian and French ancestry. Our speakers will discuss its features and value based on their years of experience using it, and how to add to its records. User entries submitted to NosOrigines.com are all verified, insuring a high degree of accuracy. The site is free and is available in French and English. Information in the database includes name, occupation, date and location of birth, baptisms, marriages and burials.

Classes at the Vermont Genealogy Library are $5.00 and run from 10:30 to noon.  The library is located on Hegeman Ave, Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester.  Parking and entrance are across from the State Police Building. Visit our website www.vtgenlib.org or call 802-310-9285 for more details.

Announcements / Genealogy Classes - March 5 & March 12
« on: March 02, 2016, 11:01:12 AM »
Here are a couple of genealogy classes available during the month of March:

More Options for Finding Online Newspaper Articles       March 5, 2016 Jason Smiley

Few sources can reveal the details of our ancestors' lives like newspaper articles. Today we can search some with an online subscription. But which website do we choose? What papers do they cover? What do they cost? In this talk Jason Smiley will cover five of the best: Newspapers.com, NewspaperArchive.com, FultonHistory.com, Chronicling America, and GenealogyBank.

History of the Abenaki and their French Allies    March 12, 2016     Jeanne Brink

Vermonters with early ancestral roots in the state may be familiar with research techniques for Yankee or Quebecois history but they can be stumped when encountering Native American ancestry. Jeanne Brink will discuss the history of the Abenaki and their relationship with their French allies. She will also talk about the Abenaki of the twenty-first century and their efforts to preserve their culture, traditions, and language.

Place - White Church - United Church of Westford (head of common)

You’re invited to a presentation on the restoration project of the spire on Westford’s white church.

Historic preservationist, Jan Lewandoski, will tell us what’s been learned about the building that he’s been working on this past summer. We have quite a gem crowning Westford’s common, which has been called a “quintessential New England village green”.

Refreshments will be served. Brought to you by the UC Preservation Fund and the Westford Historical Society.

This week's class is about researching for ancestors in the Eastern Townships, particularly for Loyalists who either fought for the British during the Revolutionary War or supported them and thereby faced severe hardships in our new nation.  Thousands of Loyalists fled to Ontario but quite a few settled just north of the Vermont border in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. These English-speaking settlers were mostly Protestants moving into a predominantly Catholic Province. They were frequently the founders of many of the towns and villages in this area.

Soon after their arrival the British government helped transplant a large number of settlers from Scotland & Ireland to the same area.  And then they were followed by French-Canadians from other parts of Quebec looking for land and opportunities.  These southern-most towns of Quebec developed close ties to northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine as well as New York. These ties have persisted and many Vermonters can trace some of their ancestry to these settler families.

Jacques Gagne has been working with other Canadian researchers to identify the many records for this area and its people.  In this talk he will share his expertise and the fruits of that labor by providing attendees with links to many of the best sources.  While he will focus on the Loyalists, their arrival and the collections of the United Empire Loyalists Association and the Quebec Family History Society he will also cover the records of churches, other societies, cemeteries and government bodies - all containing records for both Loyalists and the general population of our neighboring province.

Jacques will provide plenty of time to ask specific questions and attendees will receive a 10 page handout.  The class starts at 10:30 AM and runs to about noon.  The class fee is $5 and directions to the library can be found at:  www.vtgenlib.org/general/directions.php
