Vermont police say alcohol appears to be a factor in a single-vehicle car crash that killed a 25-year-old woman.

Colchester police say a car being driven at a high speed lost control on Bay Road and crashed into a utility pole around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses told police the car burst into flames, trapping Tasha Maring of Colchester in the front passenger seat. Officials say Maring died in the crash, and a 16-year-old St. Albans boy was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital in Burlington with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crash and trying to identify the operator of the vehicle.

Colchester, Vt. -
Police have released the name of the driver in a fatal crash in Colchester.

Police say James Companion, 16, of St. Albans, was driving the car in the wreck that killed Tasha Maring, 25, of Colchester. Maring died from blunt impact and heat-related injuries, police said.

Police say Companion smashed into a utility pole Friday on Bay Road. The car burst into flames.

Police say speed is a factor.

The investigation is continuing.

Today's Burlington Free Press states that the 16 year old boy's mother provided the alcohol for her son:
