Carol (Caldwell) Selby

FAIRFAX - Carol (Caldwell) Selby, 83, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with her family by her side. Carol was born on Nov. 3, 1923, in the Hotel Wadsworth in Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Albert Barrington and Frances Darling (Martin) Caldwell.
Carol began her career as a ballroom dance instructor for an exclusive dancing school in Brookline, Mass. and a runway model for Filenes. She married Dr. John H. Selby on July 30, 1942, in West Newton, Mass. In 1952 they moved to Lubbock, Texas and there she raised her four children and was very involved in their lives. She was very active in the PTA, serving as president for several years. She also served as President of the Medical Auxiliary in Lubbock.
In 1969 she moved to Fairfax, Vt. where she lived the remainder of her life. Her favorite past-time was painting. Her freehand style was very unique, her motto being: “If it stands still, paint it.” She later drew upon her talents to open a shop, Potpourri, selling her hand-painted country “knick-knacks.”
She loved to expand her mind by reading books and solving crossword puzzles. She took pleasure in the out-of-doors and spending time with her family and her pets.
She is survived by her four children: John H. Selby Jr. and wife, Kay of Tennessee, Susan Drew and husband, Lou of New Hampshire, Sherrill Pigeon and partner, Steve Moran of Westford, Cindy Bevins of St. Albans; 12 grandchildren: Greg and Dianna Selby of Tennessee, Jeff and Lizbeth Selby of Kentucky, Laura Selby of Kentucky, Debbie Larson of Sheldon, Melissa LeClair and husband, Terry Eels, Jon LeClair and wife, Jill of Swanton, Stefanie Pigeon of Fairfax, Justin Pigeon of St. Albans, Jennifer and Jon Magnant of Sheldon, Matthew and Angela Karlin of Milton, Kim and Paul Cluff of Spring, Texas, Bryan Bevins and girlfriend, Devan Ebel of Milton; 26 great-grandchildren. She is also predeceased by her brother, Bradford Caldwell.
There will be no public visiting hours. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. at A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel with the Reverend Dennis Hayward officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Sanderson Corner Cemetery, Fairfax.
Memorial contributions in Carol’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.  Those who wish may forward their online condolences by visiting www.awrichfuneralhome.com.
Arrangements are by John. D. Workman, A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, Vt. 05454.
