The Calico Ghost Town was an interesting site to see, carved into the mountainside. Notice the dry lake bed in the upper left corner.

When we turned off I-15 to the west entrance of Mojave Desert, we noticed the outside temperature was 115 degrees Fahrenheit. That wasn't too bad, but the warm wind coming across the desert floor made it worse. We asked at the Kelso Visitor's Center if it would possible to get to the Devil's Playground? The answer: we don't know of too many people who go there because it is 4-wheel driving in soft sand. Knowing the consequences are driving in soft sand, we opted out of this excursion.
