St. Albans police say carbon monoxide poisoning is believed responsible for the death of a 17-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a car at a park and ride lot on Sunday.

A public candlelit vigil in memory of Logan Newell, 17, of Georgia is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Park in St. Albans, said Jenna Kemp, a paraeducator at Northwest Technical Center where Newell took classes.

Police Chief Gary Taylor said tests run on the car Monday showed “two substantial leaks” in the exhaust system of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. He said with help from the Vermont Motor Vehicle Department, investigators determined exhaust fumes were venting into the passenger area.

Taylor said final toxicology test results won’t be known for a few weeks, but investigators, along with medical personnel, believe there is sufficient evidence that Newell died from the carbon monoxide.

“It is a real tragic, unfortunate accident,” Taylor said.

Newell was a student at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Taylor said. BFA officials did not return a call for comment. The school is closed this week for winter break.

Newell was dropped at the lot on Vermont 104 and Vermont 36 by a friend after a day of snowboarding, the chief said. The belief is Newell was allowing the car to warm up when he was overcome, Taylor said.

The chief outlined the following sequence:

Police received a call at 5:42 p.m. from a 22-year-old man who said he saw the teen in a car, slumped forward over the steering wheel. The man rapped on the driver’s window to try rousing the boy inside the car. When that didn’t work, the concerned man, who police declined to identify, called 911.

A St. Albans police officer arrived and couldn’t rouse the teen either. The officer smashed the front passenger-side window to get inside the locked car. Newell was not breathing and had no detectable pulse.

An ambulance arrived and crew members began resuscitation efforts as they took Newell to the Northwest Medical Center, which is around the corner from the lot.

Newell was later pronounced dead. The car is registered to his mother, police said.

As of late Monday morning, Taylor said his department was holding the vehicle and was obtaining a search warrant to examine it. A search warrant is required before police can examine the vehicle, and obtaining the document did not necessarily mean police are investigating a crime, Taylor said.

No evidence of foul play was detected at the scene, police said. There were no obvious signs of injury, Taylor said. Newell’s body was brought to a medical examiner in Burlington to conduct an autopsy, the chief said.

Any of us who have children or grandchildren who drive a car have to feel very badly for the parents of this young man.  It sounds like this is not that easy of a problem to find and I would be interested in hearing from a mechanic who does State Inspections what method they use to see if a vehicle has a dangerous leaking exhaust, since you cannot smell or see it..
