For a couple of days now when I check the obituaries on the Burlington Free Press I have been getting a red X at the start of the obituary - Mystery solved this morning.  As of today, The Burlington Free Press is also posting the obituary photo if they have one with the obituary.  Up until now, the only paper that has been doing that is The County Courier, which actually publishes theirs in color.

There are two things that we native Vermonters always do, or at least a very high percentage of us, and that is first check the obituaries and then the weather.  Perhaps the Vermont Newspapers should publish the obituaries on the front page and that would save us from opening up the paper to the obituary page before we read the front page.

I spoke with Chris Santee, Editor of The Fairfax News yesterday regarding this issue having the obituary photos of Father Giroux and Brian Barrows.  He told me he isn't sure if he will always be able to do that due to space.  As all of you know, The Fairfax News is free and all you have to do is pick it up at one of our local stores, therefore, Chris can only afford to print it with so many pages balanced out with the ads to pay for it.  Congratulations Chris, on a job well done.

The Fairfax News or some similar type of news paper has been around off and on now for many years and I believe Mike Cain has some old copies that were mimeographed and stapled together up in the museum.  Actually, I think since there were no photos in the old original Fairfax Newspapers, Mike Cain and Larry Parsons used to do some drawings for them.  These should be priceless, at least to us old Fairfax Residents in years to come.  I know that perhaps a lot of the old timers can tell about putting the paper together, which was all volunteer work by students and adults.  I am sure that Mike Cain and others can add a lot of details to this as I wasn't involved in it.  I don't remember how the early newspapers were distributed, but I don't remember them being in the stores.

Well, drifted off quite a bit from what I started to write here, but would encourage anyone to respond here, or if you aren't registered, just send me a note at vtgrandpa@yahoo.com and I will post it for you.  If I get enough history on it, will transfer portions of this post to The Tales Of Our Community section.

I used to do some drawing back in the 80's. They weren't that good. I tried, though.
They weren't able to do photographs back then. I don't remember Larry doing drawings. I could be wrong. He did articles later on.

I check out the front page of the Free Press, usually as I bring it back into the house. If the sports have their own section, I grab that first. Then the B section. Then the A. I save the comics for last.
