CAMBRIDGE -- A lost hiker called police at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, over five hours after embarking on her walk to say that she had become disoriented in the woods.

Dianne Garen, 56, used her cell phone to tell police she was lost somewhere on a snowmobile trail off of Cross Farm Drive in Cambridge. She said she did not know where she was other than on a mountain. Garen told police she had been walking in the woods since about 6 p.m. and was not wearing adequate clothes for cold weather.

The Cambridge Fire Department and Cambridge Rescue responded with State Police. Police followed fresh footprints in the snow from Garen’s vehicle found near the intersection of Cross Farm Road and Bryce Road. Trooper Hunt followed the tracks for about one hour through mountain terrain until reaching Garen about 1 mile from her vehicle.

Hunt stayed with Garen until Cambridge Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene. Garen, unable to walk due to cold and exhaustion, was carried several hundred yards to an awaiting Cambridge Fire Department ATV. She was then taken to an ambulance and treated at Fletcher Allen Health Care for non-life threatening injuries.
