Gregory P. Griffin

Waterville - Gregory Paul Griffin, 89, passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 28, 2008 at his home in Waterville.  He was born on April 17, 1919 on the Iron Gate Road in Pleasant Valley, Cambridge, VT.  Greg was the son of the late John and Mary (O’Neill) Griffin.

Greg’s earlier working years were spent on farms and sugar woods in the Pleasant Valley area.  He proudly served in World War II on the USS Menard.  He served as Waterville selectman for 12 years.  He was a member of the Masons for 65 years and a member of the American Legion Post # 35 of Jeffersonville.  He also worked for the Johnson Talc Mill in Johnson, Parker and Stearns in Johnson and the Manchester Lumber Mill in Waterville.  Greg and his wife, Arlene, worked as a team on the family farm in Waterville, sharing school bus driving for the Waterville Elementary School during the earlier years on the family farm.  Greg retired from farming in 1981.

Greg was deeply loved by his family and friends.  During his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, sugaring, reading and his trips with Arlene to Maine and the Glen in New Hampshire.  His favorite times were those when he shared memories and stories with his family and friends.  His sense of humor and gentlemanly politeness will be missed by all.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of sixty-nine years, Arlene (Erwin) Griffin of Waterville;  His daughters and sons-in-law:  Paulette and Charles Erickson of Waterville, Nancy and George Hutchins of Cambridge and Jacquelyn and Cedric Longley, Jr. of Eden.  His son-in-law Ben Becker and wife Catherine of Venice, FL and his sisters-in-law Mary Johnson, Eleanor Waterman his sister-in-law Lois Williams and husband Leslie and his brother-in-law Charles Bennett and wife Shirley.

He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Jerilyn Devin, Gregory Becker, Heidi Becker, Chuck Erickson, Carl Erickson, Craig Erickson, Roy Hutchins, George Michael Hutchins. Julie Jane Longley and his many nieces and nephews.

Many happy times were spent with his thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by his daughters:  Ellen Lucy Griffin, Mary-Lee (Griffin) Becker, his brothers James, Leighton, Ashley and his sisters Mildred Burnor, Lorraine Fisher, Maude Griffin, and his sister-in-law Marjorie Manchester and husband Henry.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday May 1, 2008 at A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  Funeral services will be held on Friday May 2, 2008 at Waterville Church of the Nazarene at 11:00 AM.  Burial will follow in the family lot in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Underhill.  Memorial contributions may be made in Greg’s memory to Lamoille Home Health & Hospice 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, Vt. 05661.  Arrangements are by John D. Workman, A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel, 1176 Main St. Fairfax, VT 05454.
